Join to discuss and play chess.

No spamming, thanks.  If your club is "Corona" themed, okay, you could mention the outbreak and that it lead you to start a new club, etc. and put an innocuous link, but this is just a club membership ad similar to any other club that spams threads for membership.

I thought you said no politics or did you mean other then yours

If you are referring to me, my position on politics in this thread has been made crystal clear by now, just read the thread.  If you cannot understand the distinctions made, I'll address reasonable questions.

Yes I did mean you. The title said no politics. None no distinctions none.

covid-19 sucks,  had it for 3 weeks,   still sore from all the coughing.  I cracked some ribs and tore muscles / got spasms and the like just getting over things (mostly) now

So...you are just moseying along in life, without a chess.com membership, and then Coronavirus hits, and you get infected, and suffer through it for 3 weeks, and it reminds you how important chess is in your life and so you join the site 5 days ago, while still recovering from your brush with mortality and your cracked ribs, and now you are here to post about it?

Bye.

The title has not changed.  Perhaps you meant the original post, but that actually says to avoid:

"- Political posts that are not related to the outbreak, or any post that is primarily politics over anything else."

If you have anything to say about the outbreak, go for it.  Otherwise, move along Beafraid/Ericthatwho...your posting history warrants you a very short leash.

From a national USA perspective, I think we are currently keeping up with the ventilator supply issue, but I think we're far behind in the PPE and testing areas.

Not just the timing of the vaccines, but also the efficacy. When it comes to vaccines, nothing can be taken for granted.

And from what I understand, the PPE issue is baaad. Just one exeample - In this video, Dr. Cywes talks about his situation, having to reuse masks, he isn't allowed to double glove or double bootie, etc.

I thought I would help the sports people in this age of staying home with Covid19. This is a funny sports broadcaster. tongue.png            https://www.facebook.com/NowThisNews/videos/2307456999556515/

Here's a sterling example of news outlets presenting the same briefing with 2 completely different slants:

https://news.yahoo.com/us-military-chief-weight-evidence-203325272.html

https://www.politico.com/news/2020/04/14/coronavirus-chinese-lab-inconclusive-186408

The quote in question:

"We've had a lot of intelligence take a hard look at that," Joint Chiefs Chairman Gen. Mark Milley told reporters Tuesday. "At this point it's inconclusive, although the weight of the evidence seems to indicate natural. But we don’t know for certain."

So one outlet takes "inconclusive" and runs with that, and the other takes "weight of evidence" and runs completely the opposite direction.

How to solve?  Our leaders need to stop making fuzzy statements that hedge their bets.  There are 4 appropriate answers to the question:

- Inconclusive, investigation ongoing

- Inconclusive, investigation called off

- Weight of evidence is conclusive enough and investigation is over with result X

I'm not sure, but I think I might have posted this link somewhere before, but it's worth repeating. If you're tired of listening to the politicians and the media hype, Michael Osterholm is a breath of fresh air. The link below is the "COVID-19 Podcasts and Webinars" Page of the CIDRAP site (Center for Infectious Disease Research and Policy). There are currently four episodes of the "Osterholm Update", along with a number of other videos and audio podcasts. A bonus is that his soothing voice is a bit ASMR-like. :-)

The only downside is that he doesn't sugarcoat the more sobering facts, but I think you guys can handle the truth.

P.S. - Oh, and if you listen to Episode 4 (The Reality of Testing), you can also download Peter Attia's Screen Testing spreadsheet to play with the numbers that Michael discusses (sensitiviy, specificity, etc.):

Haven't talked about this yet, but apparently there are a number of companies out there that are holding onto money from cancelled events, trying to give "future credit" in lieu of refunds.  I'd be disputing those with the credit card company and getting my money back.

Car ins companies are giving partial refunds for a couple of months because well no one's driving.happy.png

UK lockdown extended for another 3 weeks provisionally, will be ended when 5 conditions are met:

1. The NHS will not be overwhelmed.

2. The number of deaths drops for enough consecutive days to be conclusive that the peak is over.

3. Adequate testing and PPE is available.

4. Reliable data that infection rates are falling.

5. No risk of a second wave of infections.

Over 14000 people in the UK have now died as a result of the virus, predictions at the outset that if deaths were under 20000 it would be a good result looking accurate.

On a cheerier note a 99 year old veteran of World War 2 has raised an astonishing £18 million for the NHS by opening a just giving page and asking people to donate as he did 100 laps of his garden. What a legend.
