Our summer vacation had started 3 weeks ago and majority of my friends are going to coaching/ private tuitions to prepare for the finals during the vacation. Like enjoy your vacation dude, parents take it too seriously here.💀

Yeah. How annoying that your parent care about your future.

In fact it's quite the opposite. Parents here think tuitions are some magic formula that just "works" (when it's just a repetition of what is taught in school). The "extra practice" they give can be just found on the internet. If the parents actually cared, they would find what their children's weaknesses are and work on them (Eg - my parents noticed that I can grasp concepts but don't spend time practicing them, so they enrolled me in a test series where I'll be given more practice), not just enroll them in the most popular coaching and get mad when it doesn't work.

And don't even get me started on overworking their kids, it's the leading cause of depressed teenagers, too much work and no play.

theeldest1

Which is why homeschooling works, because the curricula is tailored to your children. As opposed to "one size fits all".

SriyoTheGreat

#26 Yup, unfortunately homeschooling is not popular in India, wish it was.

That's a pretty harsh generalization based on your short life. Perhaps it's different elsewhere?

Never disagreed, this is just the case in my country and from my experience. And again, it's not at all based on my life, in the contrary I'm one of the lucky ones whose parents understand mental health. Many psychological studies have been made on it and (again I'm only talking about teenagers) lack of hobbies and free time, directly or indirectly is a leading cause of depression.

Anyway not trying to get into a debate or anything, just suggest that you understand the context before passing a smug comment on it.

BasixWhiteBoy

Homeschooling may be better for learning and education, but public schooling is a much better for the social aspect of it all. It also does better to prepare you for a job later in life.

I would politely disagree, but instead of arguing my point, let's just leave it and see what happens in our lives. The results will speak for themselves. 😉

Although, I think you're going to do just fine in life, regardless of your education. And Ari can help you out if you get stuck!

A rich wife seems successful enough to me!

Yeah, one of the side effects of homeschooling is that I’m an antisocial nerd.

I was not being smug. I simply suggested you are too young to make sweeping comments about education, parenting, or whether or not school work leads to depression, which frankly is silly.

School is not any different today than 60 years ago. It's actually easier. You can do research online on literally any subject.

Before the internet, trips to the library for such work was weekly or more. Depression in teens is a recent phenomenon and largely due to internet overdosing, not lack of free time or excessive school work.

I was a student, a teacher and a parent. I speak from my experience also.

Social skills are important and that is a side effect sometimes of home schooling. Not necessarily anti-social but lacking social abilities normal school provides, like how to deal with all kinds of people.

Good home schooling is better in many respects than bad traditional school. The reverse is also true. But generally, home schooled graduates have difficulties in associations at work. Not terribly bad but uncomfortable in social situations.

I've hired more than just a few.

The same can be seen in kindergarden with children who were never in pre-school. They take longer to adjust.
