Dear math26,
I'm delighted to be able to help you. There are two main codes or versions of rugby. Union and League. In the late nineteenth century, there was a split in what had hitherto been just one version of the game. This was due to arguments over professionalism. Briefly, the original Rugby League in England went professional and the Union remained, until the mid 1990's, strictly amateur.
In the UK and most other rugby playing countries, Union has been by far the larger of the two codes. In this country, League is pretty well restricted to the counties of Yorkshire, Lancashire and Cheshire. Union has retained 15 players a side, League has dropped two to 13. In Australia, League is probably the bigger game. Famous teams like the All Blacks, the Wallabies and the Sprinboks are Union - dare I say also the American Eagles! The two sets of laws have diverged quite considerably over the years.
