Treason!..off to the gallows with C.K.!..Don't you be pokin' fun at our Queen cobber! Foot in Mouth ang abart..Are you the monarchist or the republican?..I've lost track. But have a republic if you want. I guarrantee British stability will suffer. Or how about a totalitarian military dictatorship?..or a religious state. The Archbishop of Canterbury could run the place. Because you have a lot more chance of your country going downhill then. Why did Scotland stay with the UK?..Why do Canada and New Zealand stick to their consitutional monarchies?..why do all the other Commonwealth countries?  The reason is stability and peace. I think a few dollars from each of us is worth that. Just keep trying to make your country the best, most peacful and fairest place it can be with The Queen right where she is. You can do it. We do. Laughing

Neither Monarchist nor Republican!!  I think we should let the Queen have a say about our discussion!

Given the imminent arrival of another new heir-in-waiting, it seems this is a timely opportunity to review what function this institution serves in a (supposedly) modern democracy.

Aside from the glamour an prestige which is decreed to be inherent in having a Royal Family, is there any aspect of this form of head of state which could not be carried out equally well by an elected president?   Is there something mystical about being born into this role, rather than chosen on merit?  Does the Divine Right of Kings still hold so much sway in what is supposed to be a secular state?

I throw these questions, and doubless many others, open to the learned commetators of these forums.  Please feel free to argue, for or against, but please have good reasoning behind your answers.

There is some irony in your statement.  In the US, we have an elected president who thinks he's divine and a king!

The Monarchy is just there to treat women like trash and enforce every sort of crass, sybaritic privilege. It is the final bastion of anti-democratic, plutocratic feudalism. It even produces loons like this guy:

Lord Bloody Monckton.

But I say good luck to any member of the royal family. You won lotto. You picked the right vagina to pop out of. Good for you. That's all it came down to: the right vagina. A different vagina might have seen you borne into a Sao Paulo slum. But you got lucky! Well done!

I might not be a Royalist but as far as I know conception is the Union of an egg and sperm.. Donated by Mother and Father.. So if a child is born in a Sao Paulo slum it's because the mother delivered their!! I do understand your stance on the inequality of it all! My Father once said...

"The ruling classes have their position because their ancestors were the biggest crooks". I am not saying you should agree nor disagree with that statement but if you examine history it is a worthy hypothesis! In my opinion. Also, If you were to travel back in time and visit some of the poorer parts of Britain you would see some desperate levels of deprivation in Britain.. Poverty, Death through disease.. Etc: The problem in Brazil is inequality, and an unfair distribution of wealth... Thankfully something we don't have on the same magnitude here!! But it's also important to point out that a great many of the Social reforms in Britain were brought about through the Labour party and not through Royal decree!! The Royal family have changed dramatically in my lifetime, but, in my own opinion, only to survive!!

In 2015 we can't do better than a Monarchy?

They live it up while people in places like London freeze to death living on the street in a carboard box?

Avatar of Roo_2_Unlimited

We should hang the monarchy out like the Americans hang out flags. :D

If you think of a 'FLEA'.... It survives as long as it gets nourishment....

Not sure where you are from Babytigrrr but us Brits pay for the 'Pomp' and also a little for the 'Ceremony'  So it's nice to know that you appreciate our donations!!

I'm an English rose and don't live too far from you if your name reflects your location.

Coventry Kid by birth... And contrary to what some people may believe... Proud to be British! ... I just have a different opinion!

Yeah, and we're both lucky enough to live in a country that allows us to have one.

Kayak (presuming you live in Britain - forgive me if I am wrong) you will never be executed for anything if you stay there. Be thankful you don't live in Indonesia under their current regime. Because you would be put to death by means nowhere near as humane and instant as the gallows. Off topic yes. Promise I won't deviate again Chair.

Hi HW...........Yes, I'm English, living in England. I know we're safe from execution here but I need to sell some Gallows Insurance to those who are unsure. Don't tell Coventry Kid, I almost sold him a policy. I think he's still considering it. It's the free pen that pulls them in. Wink
