Can you tell StumpyBlitzer that I said hi? Also I’d like to challenge him to an unrated game.
this site is broken

I didn’t intend to be rude about Martin Stahl, sorry.
But the fact remains the site is broken. I am continuing to lose multiple games, minute by minute, and I know there is nothing they can or will do to unwind it. There’s just no point in playing here.

Must be so nice, to be able to know, what other people can or will do..
Did you know that at the bottom left of this page is a button called "Help"?
Apparently it is a preferred location for asking questions, reporting abuse, making suggestions, billing issues, and reporting bugs

I understand you are annoyed but this kind of thing doesn't happen very often.
I have been told that the staff is restoring games and refunding ratings.

2 questions for Martin:
You keep saying we should move again, but how?
Why has there not been a site-wide notification sent?

I’m finally at 640 something. Yay! I know this is a little off subject but I’m trying to lighten the mood.

1. Yeah I’m confused on that too.
2. Hmmmm
I don't know any specifics, but the site has a large amount of code and sometimes, even with testing, bugs can creep in. Code updates are often batched together for different subsystems, and while individually those code changes will QA without issue, the combination might have errors.
I'm not saying that's what happened in this particular case, and I'm sure the site has a process in place to find the root cause of the issues and methods/policies to shore up processes to minimize future issues.
I do not want to go into yet another rant, but I am a software developer myself. I know the hurdles of working on a system with many subsystems and moving parts and large code bases in different languages. This type of bugs should never make it into production at this day and age. This is not some obscure defect that's difficult to spot and reproduce. It should never be let though by a professional QA team with proper testing processes in place.
I know all too well when these things happen. Cutting corners and/or lack of professionalism.

There are two main impacts.
- You made a move but because of the bug it did not actually happen. That may not show it's your move on your homepage and you may need to move again.
- Your homepage shows it's your move and you have a move alert. You look at the game but your move is showing. Take a close look and you'll see the clock is showing for your opponent, not you. In that case, it's your opponent that needs to move again.
There is the possibility on 1, that because your move wasn't actually made, due to the bug, you could have lost on time, if the time on your clock, when you made your move was low enough. That's why I suggested checking any games where you moved when the bug was in effect.
Good.
I apologize for being jerkish. Your post was just the proverbial straw, that snapped me.
Seems every site I go to is just full of so much angst, anger and negativity.
I've only been on this site for a few days and it looks much the same, in the forums at least.
And yes the irony of me moaning about others moaning does not escape me.
We humans are the strangest people.

Companies larger that chess.com, with a lot more resources have major bugs happen. So, it's not like things don't happen.
That said, I'm sure staff are not happy that this happened.

So Far been timed out of 3 games and counting! some games I'm having to keep making a move but still comes back with me to move? maybe this is a new chess variant!! Please sort this out and soon.
You should contact support about the timed out games.
Which games still show you to move where your move is the last one?

Martin
You are quite wrong. Those are not the “impacts”.
I do lose where I’ve made a move that “did not actually happen”. In those cases, as I’ve already said, it is not possible to “move again”.
I also lose because I have lost on time in a game which did not show up on my list of daily games.
In neither case is there anything I can do about it.
The site is broken.

I covered that and anyone that lost on time due to the bug should contact support.
In the past, when there have been bugs of a similar impact, the site has been good at resolving. I don't expect this to be any different.
I think he may be from chess.com. The site is broken. They can’t “handle it”.
I'm a moderator and communicate with staff. Just passing along the information I'm aware of and for something I don't know for sure, I pass along my understanding of what may be happening.
Yes, some things were broken by a code update that caused bugs. That code update was reverted back to working code and the site is working through the aftermath and follow-up. If that isn't handling it in your opinion, then not much else can be said
So the only person responding isn't even an employee???
I was going to sign up for one of the paid tiers, definitely won't now

The question is: why did the update with such obvious bugs made it to production? Have they gotten rid of the QA team? Or did all the testers go on holiday and they decided to cross their fingers and release the code that was not properly tested?
Really sloppy work. But sadly I am not surprised
