Ok so it's basically just the nut jobs then. Well at least there is one less to worry about.... for now.

They repopulate faster than they die.

When someone posts a thread, they have the ability to block anyone who disagrees with them.  It may seem to other people participating in the thread that people just drop out. However, they may simply be blocked from posting.

I propose that when someone is blocked from a thread, a little ghost symbol is placed next to their user name. That would let other users know why threads suddenly get depopulated.

For example, I was banned from an admittedly moronic thread by You_haxored_me about how someone was spamming the Tactics Trainer comments for what I thought was a constructive suggestion. ("Untrack the comments.")

I watched the thread continue for a few days and began to feel like a ghost haunting its hallways. I'm not even allowed to ask why. It's an unusual feeling.

I began to wonder how many others had suffered the same fate in the thread. There really is no way to tell. The thought occurs that it would be nice to know how many bodies are littering the floor and stuffing the closets.

It would also be nice to know when somebody has been banned by many people and when someone has banned many people. Some people probably ban anyone who disagrees. They may be from countries where open debate is not allowed.

If You_haxored_me came to this thread and I banned him the little ghost would appear next to his user name:

There are some instances where blocking may be warranted. But the privilege should not be abused.

this is a cool suggestion! I will hang on to this and can try to submit this to be looked at :)

Looks like a good suggestion. I'd like to have it implemented.

It's not their door. It's a public forum.

And I hate restrictions.

The site would have liability issues with making it public.

The problem is that there is some blocking going on for what most people would agree is true antisocial behavior on the part of some members. This would include actions that border on stalking or sexual harassment. You object that it could be a problem to identify those cases. I agree.

However, blocking is also used as a simple form of thread censorship. Some people can't stand to have anyone disagree.

We should separate the two types of blocking. The thread ghosting type could be identified without impacting the true antisocial kind.

Melvin Doucet has posted a defense of the Queen's Gambit against an unknown assailant:

http://www.chess.com/forum/view/chess-openings/the-queens-gambit-is-sound

I find that somewhere in my past I made his blocked list. I notice that he rarely gets replies to his posts from the usual suspects. I wonder how many frequent posters he has blocked.

Defending Queen's Gambit must have driven him paranoid. Everyone knows that crap is refuted.

Ooh, somebody argues with Samuel-Jake-14 calling his opponent a coward Indian and he blocks them. Ooooh.

A clear sign of a coward if I've ever seen one.

Some people are just emo.  Control freaks.  I imagine people block notonemain because they don't want to be shown in error...  I guess when you talk "ill" about an IM, even when you are just doing it to vent some steam, for a legit reason, though I may have made some errors in my logic, and I do not care to delete my posts, because I am not emo like watershoot, and DenverHigh, so I will just leave what I said as what I said, and let people think whatever they want about me.  I just don't see how a person might possibly (I say possibly because I can only speculate why he decided to do what he did) delete his public threads off chess.com and make it so that no one but his close friends can see things on his profile or even see his games or write him messages, all because of what I said, a guy that he doesn't even know, we just barely started talking about a game... ???  But what do I know he might have had other reasons for doing it, I mean just because an event happened after something else occurred doesn't neccissarily warrant a connection between to two events, such an arguement would be a false cause.  But I still ponder????  Watershoot, your a great chess player, and a good guy from what i read in the past.  I am not 100% certain, but being emo isn't good for you.  i mean I'm not a psycho.  i'm not going to hack into your computer and steal your identity or something.  You don't have to get rid of all your details online and change your name so I might think your someone else...  I dunno, maybe you just realized that public debate here was futile, and decided to move on with your life, and that's it.  In that case the least you could do is continue to debate with me in private...  but wait, is it because I talked smack about pfren?  Oh dear... surprise.png...  i don't know the answer, and I don't care all too much if I will never know, because i had worse things happen to me that I didn't know why they occured.  i am getting used to it.  Thanks for the comments, watershoot, I hope you know you really didn't need to ban me, as I probably won't respond to whatever your write anyways, due to lack of interest.

NotoneMain, hi!
