Time between moves

Recently I have noticed what I think is a trend in live chess.   Many members are playing while at their jobs.  this means they can't sit constantly at their computer for an entire game if the game is more than 10 or 15 minutes.  If it is during lunch time, it is ok, otherwise, they have to be up and moving about with their work.  Even if they work at a desk with acomputer, they must be looking over their shoulders for the supervisor.  The other experience I have had several times is that I would challenge a player to a game and if the player is losing, she/he would just stop playing withour resigning, and force me to sit there for the entire time (usually 30 or more minutes) until the clock runs out.  It seems like bad sportsman ship to me.  I suggest that Chess.com install something to declear the game abandoned if a player does not respond within a reasonable time.  Moreover, poinats should be subtracted if players take more than XXXX minutes/seconds between moves.

It was strange experience when I played a game v\s mr. Jslrning.

I was going to win the match on the next move and mr. jslrning was trapped. he quarrelled me for a long time to accept a draw, i refused.

and he told me he was going out of his computer to make me waiting to have a victory.

here is the conversation:

 zaphigep has declined a draw

DRAW DECLINED: zaphigep has declined a draw

zaphigep: no, this match has its own fate

zaphigep: either i, or u

zaphigep: look itz mine... :)

zaphigep: u had great chances

Juslrning: well, you should have won a long time ago when I lost the rook the gentleman thing to do is draw given that I fourht back from a defecit. A draw hurts no ones record, then we can play a third game for

Juslrning: all the marbles

zaphigep: ok

zaphigep: no,

zaphigep: i already told u

Juslrning has disconnected. Waiting for reconnect...

zaphigep: i dont accept a draw in the brink of victory. itz nothing less than betraying my heart...

DRAW DECLINED: zaphigep has declined a draw

Juslrning has reconnected.

Juslrning: you there

zaphigep: sure

Juslrning: my computer went blank

zaphigep: waitin for ur next move

Juslrning: I thought I had a forfeit by technical glitch. Sorry, I have an old computer

zaphigep: no prob.

Juslrning: you are not very honest

Juslrning: in the first game, when I was ahead, you adked for a draw

Juslrning: I declined until the score was even then I offered the draw

Juslrning: that was fair

zaphigep: i had many misclicks in that match

zaphigep: bt i never told u.

zaphigep: becauz, itz sportsman spirit

Juslrning: now I have a compuater malfunction, I was behind, I even up the score and adk for a draw, but you refuse

zaphigep: to accept the losses in itz own sense

Juslrning: I am told this is a game for ogentlemen

zaphigep: i dont care your sayings...

zaphigep: just look at the board and do what u want

Juslrning: why is it ok for you to ask for a draw when I was ahead, now when I ask for a draw when we are even, you refuse

zaphigep: no one accepted a draw in this match. okay?

zaphigep: first, u refused. jst like it now me

zaphigep: no difference.

Juslrning: I am sorry you are such an unfair person. In protest, I wil just let the 20 minutes run out. If you want a win on those terms, then you know nothing about sportsmanship

Juslrning: The difference is that you wanted to draw when I had both a material and positional advantage

zaphigep: in the second game, when you having a queen, and u asked for a draw, i refused.

Juslrning: I refused until atleast we had even material---just like we are now.

zaphigep: thats for i wanted a result in the match...

Juslrning: Are you a religious man?

zaphigep: sure.

Juslrning: Because you are not being very honest

zaphigep: how honesty come to this board.

Juslrning: In first game, as you started to lose, you asked for a draw. I was ahead in material and position, so I refused, why draw in those terms

zaphigep: just look at the situation and accept what the level is now...

Juslrning: when we evened up the score, then I accept draw.

zaphigep: bt i lost two points by that

zaphigep: it was equal to loosing

Juslrning: Look let us draw, and play a third game, and no matter what happens we do not draw.

zaphigep: not third.

zaphigep: fourth

zaphigep: u hav already won one. and i am on the edge.

Juslrning: You are afraid AI will beat you. I am just a beginner and am giving you a hard time

Juslrning: I did not win, it was draw

zaphigep: u just try to laugh at me.

Juslrning: in a draw no on wins

zaphigep: bt dear, i dont care it.

Juslrning: I am not laughing I am frustrated by your unfair attitude

Juslrning: anyway, good by. I am going to the store. when the time runs out, you will get your win

zaphigep: no prob.

Juslrning: I believe I can beat you even though you have more experience than I

zaphigep: i will wait for u

Juslrning: I proved it when I just came back and tied the score

zaphigep: no problem dear.

zaphigep: fist, u hav to accept to the situatio

Juslrning: No, I will never play you again. You have no honor

zaphigep: n

zaphigep: no problem.

Juslrning: Byt the way, in this country you do not refer to Men as dear

zaphigep: there will be a lot players onlie

Juslrning: Ok good bye. but remember I whi8pped your behind

zaphigep: i hav played atleast ten games today.

Juslrning: I am going away from my computer. I will be back in 2 hour. enjoy your cheap win on time

zaphigep: and i dont want to remember something special.

zaphigep: no proble

zaphigep: m

zaphigep: i have many other jobs to complete the remaining 13 minutes

zaphigep: if u r there, itz strange u do jst opposite wot u say.

zaphigep: i read ur topic on Time between moves

zaphigep: and i realized u r a cheater when you are going to lose

CarlMI

G/30 takes 60 minutes to complete.  Accept that and you have no problem.  A players time is his.  Yeah there is rudeness, bad sportsmanship, etc but you can't legislate bad manners away.  You will only create more problems.  If your opponent won't resign or move he will lose on time.  If he doesn't move the time to completion is less than if you were both moving.  If you want more than one game in your hour, play faster time controls.

They have already said that they are gonna be making changes to deal with people who abandon games. But players who take too long between moves? What? There isn't anything that they can or should do about those. If a player is playing a 30:00 game and they take 20 minutes to think about their 5th move, this is their right.

I think that playing with bonus time can help this-like 6 30 if you want a long game, but overall-let players take the time you both agreed to.

reading zaphigep comment it make me want to laugh reading ur topic juslrning..

One thing that ICC has that might or might not be on live chess here is the "noescape" setting.  If someone leaves a game for whatever reason, disconnect, etc.  they lose the game.  It takes mutual agreement but now that Live Chess has stabilized it might be an option.  Play only those who accept the "noescape" option and cut down on people dumping the game.

There'll always be people playing unethically for a wide variety of reasons, but is it worth letting it get to me? I admit I've gotten frustrated with those who tend to ignore fair play etiquette, and I've voiced my opinion a couple times; but, when I take a few seconds to think about it, I know that I should just move on. If it cost me a few points or a little time, so what; I can always go to another game. There's still a lot of good people out there too!
