Played in the SD Governor's Cup - I was excited to play in my first FIDE rated tournament, SD Governor's Cup.  It was a lot of fun.  My overall play was good.  I threw away some good chances but made use of them too. My openings w...

For the last 8+ years I have just been playing random speed games on chess.com when I was on the toilet or something.  I walked into a restaurant in town and people were playing and asked if I wanted to join.  a few months later--  ...

I am happy that I could clearly see my weaknesses here.  It gives me some good stuff to work on.  I normally do not like opening up the game unless I see some clear advantage of me doing so.  It looks like here I should have done it.  I was just ...

I officially have a chess coach now.  He pointed out some of my weaknesses and gave me some suggestions.  One of which was to not fear the Sicilian.  When I played in highschool I would lose to all people that would play it against me.  So I gathe...

My opponent likes to play quickly and aggressively.  I thought an annoying but solid defense would suffice.  I played the opponent once before and he blundered in the end game.

This was a 4 game, 1 day tourney with a time control of g60/5d Game 1: This is the first time in my life I played someone above 2100!  I was very excited...  After the game my opponent was kind enough to talk to me about my weaknesses and how...

Here is my OTB game from last night... This is fairly typical of the grob games I have against opponents that are not sure on how to proceed against non-common (dubious) openings.

I may have lost but learned a whole lot. I am not really sure what to write when the same combo exsists on the board but is missed by both players for many moves.  How do I even analyze the moves where a tactic is missed turns in a row.  All I...

This is the game that did it for me.  After the two tournaments ended not even a week apart, I went from 1510 -> 1711.  I started July off right.   Look out 1800... I am goin' for you next.

I have played this opponent before and just got crushed.  I played 1. d4 h6 2. e4 g5 3. c4 Bg7 in the first game as black and I figured that this time I could essentially play a reverse nimzo indian... but have one extra move.  Didn't pan out. I ...

I had a fun game.  I have not been playing much because I have been studying for my dental boards.  I out-rated my opponent by more than 500 points, but it was still fun and my opponent was very nice and I learned something interesting.     1.b3 ...

I just saw a video that had games played by  Maxime Vachier-Lagrave.  They were extremely exciting games.  Does anyone know of a good place to see more of his games.  Annotated is better than not.  But, I'll take either!  :)

I have been struggling to find a good defense for black against e4 that I did not have to study much theory to understand.  So here is basically all you need to know to play the Fort Knox variation.  1)1. e4 e6 2. d4 d5 3. Nc3(or Nd2) dxe4 4. Nx...

I have been focusing much of my studies on understanding the g2-g4 or g7-g5 push.  I started playing the grob and borg to really help understand it's strenths and weaknesses.  If the push happens early castling is not a requirement.  In this game ...

I was in a match against "PHILIPPINES' FINEST Chess Club" and my opponent timed out.  It made me think that perhaps the typhoon was the reason for time out.  So I checked his other games and he timed out on a whole bunch of them.  Is there any way...

The Grob has a bad reputation among players and the Chess.com computer analysis feature also shows most variations to be "-0.8" or worse for white.  But, provided I stay away from the Grob gambit move order (1. g4 d5  2. bg2) the g...
