I have high functioning autism and can get myself around/travel but often struggle to discuss a game or conduct other forms of live conversation. So if you face me over the board, please don't take it rudely if I don't say very much in a post-mortem analysis.

After the height of the pandemic, the upsurge of many young and underrated players has become a problem for many other strong players. However, I see it as an opportunity to greet and encourage younger players. I used to be quite shy, so this new practice works great for me. Let me say more about my personal discovery.

Trick: know the person’s name in advance and address the person by name before saying your own name. Many players appreciate it if you remember their name even before you get paired in a game.

In a new greeting I usually just say my name and “nice to meet you” or similar. My discovery lies in the power of new greetings without seeking longer talks. “Short and sweet” is key, along with remembering others’ names/faces.

This is why I must keep playing. Where else do I get to greet new kids - from a position of mentorship?

Nothing beats in-person chess, but I enjoy playing tournament games on this site like the US Chess Blitz/Rapids on a volunteer basis. Sorry for not usually accepting other challenges except by paid arrangements.

I live about an hour and a half away from the famous Marshall Chess Club located in NYC, where I’m a member and continue to play actively.
