- Born in Coventry, West Midlands 1962. Served in British Merchant Navy for 10 years mostly on the SS Canberra working in the restaurant and then bars. Visited Far East, Persian Gulf, North, South, East and West Africa, East and West Coast USA, Caribbean, South Pacific, South America. Also served on SS Uganda taking troops and supplies to Port Stanley in the Falkland Islands due to the conflict with Argentina. Learned to play chess at school at about 11 years old.
