The first official World Championship match was between Wilhelm Steinitz and Johannes Zukertort.

Steinitz vs Chigorin 1889

In 1889 Steinitz defended his title against one of the great players of the era, Mikhail Chigorin. The two players competed to 10 wins and Steinitz won 10-6 with only one draw!

Steinitz - Gunsberg 1890

In 1890 Steinitz faced a challenge from Isidor Gunsberg, a Hungarian Master. The match was best of twenty games and Steinitz recovered from an early deficit to win 10.5-8.5.

Steinitz vs Chigorin 1892

In 1892 Chigorin played a rematch with Steinitz and kept it close throughout. They played first to ten wins and only a blunder from Chigorin in the 23rd game prevented him from reaching a 9-9 tie score. As it was, Steinitz narrowly defended his title 10-8.
