I learned to play chess as a young child from my father. I read only one book, The Fireside Book of Chess by Chernov and Reinfeld published in 1949 which my father owned. I liked it because the quizzes had answers and I could play the games and see positions, tactics and learn something about openings. I used it from the time I was 9 or 10 into high school. I bought books and borrowed from the library in my town but never joined USCF or saw modern publications of recent tournaments and more recent theory.  I took the game back up in my early 60's and now help with the local club at summer chess camps and a local school club.  I am still a Patzer but enjoy daily exercises with puzzles, online long games and occasional OTB chess when I can find an opponent.  I frequently play OTB with my grandchildren trying to spark an interest in them for the game.
