King and Grasshopper Theory
Here’s my thought on the King and Grasshopper vs King endgame. Remember, the Grasshopper attacks by jumping over a piece and landing next to it. A checkmate must also be a check. Kings cannot touch each other. Alright, what does all that have to do with the King and Grasshopper vs King endgame? Think about it. The Grasshopper must check by jumping over the same side’s King and landing next to it. That means, for the Grasshopper to check, the Kings must touch each other, and the Grasshopper must be in line with them. That is illegal in chess (Kings touching each other), and because a checkmate must be a check, the Grasshopper and King cannot checkmate alone!
