I was wondering if the style of chess you play will have an impact on the opening you play? As I play more games, I feel a lot less stressed, when I play a defensive style of game. I'm still terrible, but I was wondering as I explore openings, if there is a particular group of openings for more defensive closed style of players? And I'm sure this question has been posed a hundred or more times in the past. I just feel that I need to be sure that the openings I'm looking at fit my style of play moving forward. Thanks in advance for any insight, advice, etc.

How fast do yall think I can reach 1300?
do you: - probably play too much chess - have 1600+ rating in rapid - are aiming for intense training to hit 1800, 2000? well, you can be my rapid training partner! at the 1600 level, it seems like a long road ahead to climb the mountain to 2000, and making any further progress seems difficult. but with mutual help and support, it is definitely not impossible... post here if you are interested in training together so we can help each other learn strategies to improve our chess!
First i would like to start this address by apologizing ... to ABSOLUTELY NOBODY. WHO SAID THE VIZNIK VARIATION ISN'T GOATED? WHO SAID IT?!? The Viznik Variation (Full name: Scandinavian Defense: Viznik Variation / SDVV, also Scandinavian Defense: Viznik Variation Accepted : 1. e4, d5 2. exd5, Qxd5 3. Nc3, Qe6+ 4. Qe2, Qxe2+ / or also the SDVV Declined: 1. e4, d5 2. exd5, Qxd5 3. Nc3, Qe6+ 4. Be2, b6 5. Nf3, Ba6 6. O-O, Bxe2) Let's get it out of the way; The Viznik Variation (SDVV) has haters. Unfortunately for them, the SDVV has Bobby Fischer on its side, as evident by a startling checkmate pattern win in a losing position after blundering my rook. Of course, if you blunder a piece, it's hardly the SDVV's fault. Regardless, the SHEER POWER of the SDVV proves TIME AND TIME AGAIN to be a menacing force that opponent's struggle to understand and defend against, and even after a blunder and a losing position, can easily up and lose the game with a single misstep. Today, Martin did his best to diminish my dreams of reaching 1300 by disconnecting me from not one, but two rapid games back to back. My internet is fine, but Martin saw I was nearing 1300 and DC'd me from the servers, and cost me 20+ ELO. No matter, as I said to my friends in Beginners & Masters, I will win those 20 ELO points back with none other than the Viznik Variation. No! You Shall Not! The cries were endless. Mockery, heathen cries for me to not indulge in the Viznik Variation. Surely, the cries of the peasants that waned from the city halls of B&M like dying swans in a pond, would disavow my wish of playing the Viznik Variation, right? Of course not. Not by the hand of God shall the SDVV become a thing of the past, rather a thing of the future. The first game after Martin's deceit comes with the SDVV Declined, actually my favorite version of the Viznik Variation because I just know white thinks he's special and winning, UNTIL 5. Ba6. Now, from the above game we can see an interesting development in the SDVV, that being the G-Line. Oh my GAWD, the G-Line is amazing. You want to attack my queen? Bully my princess? FINE BRO. Do it. I'll just move it to g6 and auto-win. TF? The next game we look at is another SDVV Declined, but this time with Ne2. Ne2 is such a stupid move and makes me laugh, it traps your bishop in and makes me the bully. I want to bully you so bad when I see Ne2, and with Ba6 I bully you. However, I wasn't really paying attention this game, rather talking mad smack with the boys so I ended up blundering my rook. This ended up being a GREAT thing for the Viznik Variation, as I was able to solidify the G-line of the SDVV Declined and show just how goated the Viznik Variation can be, even in a losing position >but V-viznik the engine says the Viznik Variation is losing! DO I LOOK LIKE I GIVE AF ABOUT WHAT CHESS.COM'S BUMMY ENGINE RAN BY MARTIN SAYS? The Viznik Variation is undefeated in rapid. >b-but V-viznik the Viznik Variation is b-bad Why? Because you're a nerd who only plays accepted theory? Get crushed by the SDVV nerd. Bobby Fischer would play the SDVV and bully you to submission >d-daddy v-viznik i'll just p-play d3 a-and the SDVV is crushed a-and w-white is winning AND? what's your point? Are you trying your best to tell me you're of homosex? Like tf? I'll eventually find a way around d3, don't you worry your sweet cheeks boi boi. Your days are numbered >sir viznik, I am a high rated player and I concur the SDVV is a magnificent opening with large potential and more lines to discover, and I especially like the new discovery of the g6-line You are a distinguished fellow who Bobby Fischer would be proud of. Salute.

This is one question I see a lot, and one question I no longer answer with any sort of seriousness. For example: a 1500 player asks, "How can I go to 1600 rating?" or "What's the difference between 1500 and 1600?" While it seems like a good question, asking what kind of skills are the biggest difference between the ratings, it is impossible to give any one answer because of how inherently different people play. You might have one 1600 who is an endgame buff, while another 1600 who is strong tactically. Or another 1600 who is well versed in an amalgamation of openings, and is usually better off out of the opening. There is no one answer. At the same time, besides its unanswerability, there is also a sense of un-seriousness, if that makes sense. To me, at least, it feels like the asker is looking for something of a shortcut to get to their rating goal. And while it's always nice to get good faster than others, at some point you'll trip and fall without the solid enough foundations. One time in a 90 minute time control tournament, I saw a 1900 play the stafford gambit against a 2160. Unsurprisingly, he was destroyed. Normally, for people that want to improve, at least, they will try to play their best against stronger people, usually in the lines they are comfortable with. This way, if they lose, they can learn something from the higher rated player. But this 1900, what do you think he learned? Twenty minutes into the round, he was already down a piece. What is there to learn from this? A prime example of trying to use shortcuts, and a waste of 80 minutes (he got checkmated) for everyone in my opinion. Especially because of the not-serious feeling that I get from these questions, I don't answer them remotely seriously anymore. Someone on discord last night asked the same thing. I told him to buy eggs. Why eggs? Because you throw them at people who are bad at clownery. And if you increase the range, to say, about 400 points, then at that point the higher rated player is just better at EVERYTHING. While you can find the "biggest" difference between the two, what does that do? It doesn't make you as high rated as them, because you will still have to improve on the other aspects. You could have reached the same conclusion even if you DIDN'T ASK. Thus, answering such questions are redundant. If you really wanted to improve, then what you need to do is find YOUR biggest weakness. Not the biggest difference in skill between you and someone else. There are many ways to do this, but I favor Axel Smith's (the writer of the woodpecker method) "list of mistakes", where you analyze a number of games (about 100, but it can be less) and come up with your most frequently made mistakes. Categorize them. Tally them up. BE SPECIFIC! Not "opening mistake", but "forgot theory." or "forgot preparation". They are two different things. When you have that finished, ask yourself why you make those mistakes. Do not consider chess factors, but also health and other outside factors as well. If you didn't calculate as much because you were tired, then why were you tired? Did you eat the wrong food? Did you not get enough sleep? There is always something you can do to improve your chess.

rapid this is positional chess!!! I debated whether or not to put this in the brag about your games forum. I decided not to, because I felt I was influenced by Swissphoenix's forum about converting opening advantages. It's not hard, just be careful. Make those weaknesses, then open up the position. By principle, your opponent can't resist, but you do have to be aware for his possibilities. Shut down possible routes of counterplay - this is what I did with Be4 in the game.
He was a 700 before he lost so now I took his place.

The Scandinavian Defense: Viznik Variation continues to be a menacing and dominate opening for black, developing every day in Viznik Labs. Today's game we see how the Viznik Varation Accepted (VVA / SDVVA) continues to prove to be one of the most dominate openings for black, and a devastating mistake for white that leads to rapid development for black, a strong centralized position, and leaves white behind in development. While traditionalists may scoff at the Viznik Variation, with testing, implementation, and real-life use, it is quickly becoming a radically fierce and dominate opening for black. The opening is particularly powerful in bullet and blitz, with the main line being easy to memorize and providing tons of options for black while white wastes time trying to counter - there is hope for the SDVV Qe6+ to become a real rapid+ opening in the near future.
I nearly broke my winstreak after bumping into this hacker Then Past self when on a killing spree on players in the Chess Arena Til lost to a 700 to time even a 800 died. Like his bar when from 4 to 0 in 15s

The format for the Second B&M Candidates Tournament has been decided after much deliberation. It will be one, big knockout tournament, based off of the World Cup. Anyone wishing to participate just type “Yes” in the comments and I will add you to the registration list. Once enough players have registered, the list will be lumped together and everyone will be seeded and paired to someone based on the USCF Swiss system, with the highest seed playing the lowest, second place playing second to last, and so on, and so forth. Time control and amount of games to be played is still TBD. You will have one week to negotiate with your opponent and organize a game. For now, just let me know if you want to join then we’ll work out the finer details later. Registration List: @Nimzo-IndianaJones @Ninjaswat @chaotikitat @kowarenai @chz3369 @Chr0mepl8edSt0vepipe @Viznik @little_guinea_pig @TheChessman_78 @snow @KnightAttack1567 @KingMonkey400 @Chesswithnickolay @chessplayer109485 @LazyDog24 @bankai2069 @chests909@shanlee123 @Wowthisisweird @Wolf_Plays_Chess @Trophies100 @colorfulcake @the_fish_lair @fayez58@TheSwissPhoenix @Hvenki @OranegJuice @DubstepJunkie @BellaAndRosie @tetrafishygm2 @neatgreatfire

31 players have registered for the B&M World Championship. Once a champion is crowned, we will have a series of Swiss tournaments as the Candidates to create a group of players to challenge the new champion. The rest of the seeding is below: 1. @little_guinea_pig 2250 2. @TheSwissPhoenix 2139 3. @Trophies100 2080 4. @chessplayer109485 2067 5. @ninjaswat 2066 6. @chesswithnickolay 2066 (ninjaswat wins tiebreak and the #5 seed due to a significantly higher blitz rating). 7. @colorfulcake 2065 8. @tetrafishygm2 1986 9. @kowarenai 1919 10. @the_fish_lair 1878 11. @fayez58 1874 12. @DubstepJunkie 1867 13. @neatgreatfire 1859 14. @chz3369 1770 15. @snow 1748 16. @Nimzo-IndianaJones 1704 17. @Chr0mepl8edst0vepipe 1686 18. @hvenki 1625 19. @LazyDog24 1571 20. @KingMonkey400 1528 21. @chaotikitat 1442 22. @KnightAttack1567 1404 23. @OranegJuice 1356 24. @BellaAndRosie 1337 25. @TheChessman_78 1295 26. @Viznik 1214 27. @Wolf_Plays_Chess 1163 28. @shanlee132 1154 29. @bankai2069 1009 30. @Wowthisisweird 917 31. @chests909 752 Pairings: @little_guinea_pig -FIRST ROUND BYE #2 @TheSwissPhoenix (white) vs. #31 @chests909 #3 @Trophies100 (black) vs. #30 @Wowthisisweird #4 @chessplayer109485 (white) vs. #29 @bankai2069 #5 @ninjaswat (white) vs. #28 @shanlee132 #6 @chesswithnickolay (black) vs. #27 @Wolf_Plays_Chess #7 @colorfulcake (white) vs. #26 @viznik #8 @tetrafishygm2 (black) vs. #25 @TheChessman_78 #9 @kowarenai (black) vs. #24 @BellaAndRosie #10 @the_fish_lair (white) vs. #23 @OranegJuice #11 @fayez58 (black) vs. #22 @KnightAttack1567 #12 @DubstepJunkie (white) vs. #21 @chaotikitat #13 @neatgreatfire (white) vs. #20 @KingMonkey400 #14 @chz3369 (white) vs. #19 @LazyDog24 #15. @snow (black) vs. #18 @hvenki #16. @Nimzo-IndianaJones (black) vs. #17 @Chr0mepl8edst0vepipe This easily took an hour for me to finish, and there's bound to be mistakes. Don't hesitate to let me know if there are any. You have from now March 11 to next Saturday (March 19) to private message, chat, whatever with your opponent and play ONE 15/10, unrated game with them. Colors are specified in the pairings. It is mandatory to play from whatever color is designated to you, otherwise the game is null and void. Moreover, when the game is finished, post the results and a link to the game here. Good luck everyone!! Negotiate with your opponent here.

Happy April Fools Day! April 1, 2025: “The ability to play chess is the sign of a gentlemen. The ability to play chess well is a sign of a wasted life.” -Paul Morphy, GM. (Do you think he stole this quote from his dad who shamed him into quitting chess?)
