How to become an excellent chess variant creator? (Although I may not be qualified, I can still give some advice for newcomers to this club.)
Here are the steps to becoming a creator:
1. Understand and adapt to the basic variant rules by playing and testing them.
2. Read all useful forums related to creating chess variants before asking questions. I've noticed that some new creators ask questions or even create variants before reading these, and if you do this, your questions and variants may be bad or even a bit stupid. (sorry)
3. Play custom variants. You can find many accepted NCVs and WOFs on variants.world, where you can play them. You need to find a sense of acceptance in the variants and try to incorporate that feeling into your own variant.
4. Try to create a chess variant. You should value your variant and not treat it lightly. You can post it in the Position Workshop and listen to the feedback from others. (testing before you post it) (also, add players from the custom community as friends as there are few other people you can realistically test your creations with.) For the choice of this variant, I recommend selecting some variant types that are very common on variants.world, such as POCKET CHESS. (this is for practice and only for practice, avoid it after this!)
5. After careful consideration, if you are sure that the variant is excellent, you can submit it to variants.world.
If you have completed the above steps, you are already a qualified variant creator! But how do you become an excellent creator?
Here is my advice.
1. Use the Position Workshop. Don't submit your variants without careful thought (until you are very experienced).
2. Take inspiration from life. Try out some unique ideas and refine them, and you are likely to come up with a good variant.
3. Take your variants seriously!! Test more, think more, and try new ideas for your variant. (if you think it's bad, then don't submit it, try to improve it or even give up it.)
4. Pay attention to your variants and other good ones, and learn from their strengths and weaknesses.5. be prepared to revise a declined submission, and use is as an opportunity to improve your idea although sometimes it's better to move on.
That's all I have to say. Welcome to all variant creators! You can also complement it if you have other ideas.
