Shatranj is one of the oldest forms of chess, it is over 1200 years old and originates from Persia. The pieces in shataranj look the same as normal chess pieces, but move differently. Both kings start on the d file, and both queens are on the e file. The rest of the setup is similar to normal chess.
the queen can only move one space to the diagonal, and it is called a ferz
the bishop can only move two squares to the diagonal, and is called a alfil
the king is called a shah and moves like a normal king
the rook is called a rukh and moves like a normal rook
the knight is called a faras and moves like a normal knight
the pawns are called piyadeh, and move like normal pawns. they cannot move two spaces on the first move and are promoted to a ferz on the 8th rank
I think new pieces would need to be developed to replace the chess pieces as well, otherwise it would be confusing. This variant is similar to chaturanga, but would has a few key differences. What do you think?
