Dear Teammates, In order to promote an environment that is as rewarding, and as just, as can be for all of our members, the Administrators of the Red Army are proposing that we, the Red Army membership, adopt the following 'ground-rules'. These 'ground-rules' shall act as the guideline which governs our participation in the group; and shall apply to all without favour. This group links each individual to each other, Manchester United football, and Chess.com. As such, we are a community asking for your support and feedback; we encourage you to please post your comment on or before Sat 28th, Nov, 2009. Thank you. RED ARMY GROUND-RULES 1. TEAM MATCHES - Play tough and fair to the end. Take vacation if you can before needlessly timing out, or easily giving up, games. The group's resources can improve your play! (We have a Man Utd theme - have we ever won a European cup in less than 90 mins...this is our philosophy.) 2. VOTE CHESS - Play as a team. Read the previous post. Post your ideas for team evaluation if you differ. This reduces the chances of inferior moves winning the vote! (We are yet to hear a good argument against this policy.) 3. BEHAVIOUR - We don't suffer spammers, posting inappropriate links, and disrespect of ones teammates or others, etc. (Essentially the same as chess.com public forum rules.) 4. MEMBERSHIP - By joining Red Army, and retaining membership, you agree to accept these ground-rules. (End)

jack-warner-fifa-ban-for-life As a 'Trini' and football fan I have been following the fallout of this investigation. We in Trinidad suspected for years, since the Havelange days, that for the most part all was not kosher with FIFA dealings. I personally suffered as far back as the 1980's when Jack bought the U16 Concacaf finals to Trinidad. Dwight Yorke, later of ManU fame, and Russell Latapy later of Mourinho's Porto were in our national team. Jack announced at an early game the "Raffle of a Gold Watch" he claimed was given to him by a Sultan; and I naively bought 3 tickets at $20. Having not heard anything by the final match as I encountered him in the stadium aisles I enquired as to the winner of the watch? I was subjected to a silent bland stare while he hurried past. All that to say that though I am not an apologist for Jack, but it does seem that he is being thrown under the bus here with this belated ban. Clearly, Jack's actions and advancement in the FIFA organisation is a reflection of FIFA. Not a reflection of Trinidad or Trinidadians (Trini's) or even Jack himself; no more so than is Chuck Blazer a reflection of US soccer.

Speed Vote Chess is a very intense and very exciting way to spend your weekend. Games are played at 10-minutes per move and can last anywhere from a few hours to over a day (which is why it is highly reccommended to have players in multiple time zones across the globe to keep the game alive while others sleep). Games begin in February with the Finals taking place in October. If you would like to register your team, please follow this link to the SVC-HQ: http://www.chess.com/groups/forumview/2015-registration Hope you can join us!!

I thought I'd just outline the rules/system to clear up any confusion: Format: (Currently) 2 Leagues of 7 Players 2 Relegated, 2 Promoted If a player has to miss a season due to vacation etc. they can return to the same division next season. If a player has to indefinitely leave they will have to start again in the bottom division. Each season will last exactly 2 months, with season 2 starting on June 1st 2014, Season 3 on August 1st etc. Unfinished games are counted as 0-0, so any player who takes too long will be relegated by virtue of not finishing their games. The league table will be frozen as it at 5pm on the last day of the month, e.g. 31st May, so invites can be sent out etc. If there is a tie for promotion (and tiebreak), the two players will have a play-off game or both be promoted if there is a space. Any more queries please ask below so I can add them to the list above! Thanks

Seasons Greetings Everyone! A new vote chess tournament - http://www.chess.com/forum/view/tournaments/csc-2013 is being organized for next year. Are we, Red Army, interested in participating in it? What is your opinion? Please let us know by commenting here before year's end. Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year!
The Dark Knight RisesCustom Trophy Tournament SeriesOpening July 20th The epic conclusion to the best Batman trilogy ever deserves the most epic Dark Knight Tournament ever!! In 2008, Batman learned that he does in fact have limitations after all. Likewise, in our first Dark Knight Tournament, we learned many lessons regarding what kind of limitations we have. Our first tournament saw a plethora of Jokers defying the rules and/or timing out without making a single move. So this time around the standard tournament minimums (# of games and timeout percentage) will be in place. Also, 8 of the 9 tournaments will be thematic which means that the game will start with a pre-determined position in which black has already opened with their DARK KNIGHT. This will eliminate all of the forfeits that happened last time when some Joker would open with their black pawn instead of their DARK KNIGHT. Since we learned how incredibly long a tournament can last at 7-days per move, or even 5-days, the new tournaments will all be set for 3-day time controls. It is the third movie after all, so it only seems appropriate. For this same reason, we will have groups of four with one simultaneous game so that everyone will be playing in 3 games at a time. And finally, just so that the big brains in The 2K Club don’t have all the fun, there will be 3 separate rating levels so that everyone has a chance at getting one of those awesome Dark Knight Custom Trophies!!! The one tournament that is not thematic will be by invitation only. If you wish to play in The Dark Knight Rises – Open Tournament, you must send me a message asking for an invitation. In this message, you must acknowledge that you agree to open with your DARK KNIGHT as black regardless of how white opens. With 20 possible first moves for white, and 4 possible first moves for black, this means there is a total of 80 possible variations that these games could take. Anyone who does not open with their DARK KNIGHT agrees to resign that game as forfeit. YOU MUST AGREE TO THIS RULE TO RECEIVE AN INVITATION!!! The other 8 tournaments will start from the 4 most common white openings (1.e4, 1.d4, 1.Nf3, and 1.c4) with the two most common DARK KNIGHT responses (1.Nf6 and 1.Nc6). The 3 rating levels will be: A) 2000 and over, B) 1400-1999, C) 1399 and below. Here are the links to all 27 of The Dark Knight Rises Tournaments: The Dark Knight Rises 1a – Open (Invitation Only) The Dark Knight Rises 2a – Indian (1.d4…Nf6) The Dark Knight Rises 3a – Zukertort (1.Nf3…Nf6) The Dark Knight Rises 4a – Anglo-Indian (1.c4…Nf6) The Dark Knight Rises 5a – Alekhine (1.e4…Nf6) The Dark Knight Rises 6a – Nimzowitsch (1.e4…Nc6) The Dark Knight Rises 7a – Mikenas (1.d4…Nc6) The Dark Knight Rises 8a – Black Mustang (1.Nf3…Nc6) The Dark Knight Rises 9a – Anglo-Lithuanian (1.c4…Nc6) The Dark Knight Rises 1b – Open (Invitation Only) The Dark Knight Rises 2b – Indian (1.d4…Nf6) The Dark Knight Rises 3b – Zukertort (1.Nf3…Nf6) The Dark Knight Rises 4b – Anglo-Indian (1.c4…Nf6) The Dark Knight Rises 5b – Alekhine (1.e4…Nf6) The Dark Knight Rises 6b – Nimzowitsch (1.e4…Nc6) The Dark Knight Rises 7b – Mikenas (1.d4…Nc6) The Dark Knight Rises 8b – Black Mustang (1.Nf3…Nc6) The Dark Knight Rises 9b – Anglo-Lithuanian (1.c4…Nc6) The Dark Knight Rises 1c – Open (Invitation Only) The Dark Knight Rises 2c – Indian (1.d4…Nf6) The Dark Knight Rises 3c – Zukertort (1.Nf3…Nf6) The Dark Knight Rises 4c – Anglo-Indian (1.c4…Nf6) The Dark Knight Rises 5c – Alekhine (1.e4…Nf6) The Dark Knight Rises 6c – Nimzowitsch (1.e4…Nc6) The Dark Knight Rises 7c – Mikenas (1.d4…Nc6) The Dark Knight Rises 8c – Black Mustang (1.Nf3…Nc6) The Dark Knight Rises 9c – Anglo-Lithuanian (1.c4…Nc6) Here’s a link to all the Custom Trophies that are up for grabs!!! As most of you are aware of, there are many instances of people on this site who are suspended because they are caught cheating. Usually they are caught when people tend to notice that their moves match very closely with moves that a computer would make. I think that there are many subtle ways in which a person who cheats can give themselves away before it is finally proven by matching their moves with a chess engine. I will give you readers one example that I experienced. I was flipping through my friend list yesterday and noticed that one of them was missing. It was a user by the name of BrainFactory. I went to his profile and discovered that his account had been disabled. Personally, I was not very surprised by that. I am ruling out the possibility that he decided to pack up and leave. He was very active on here with about 200 or more games going on at once, and he was very sociable even offering his email address on his profile. I first played him when his rating was in the mid 1800's. We played a few more games and he was very polite and friendly and invited me to be on his friends list. I didn't think anything was unusual until his rating soared over 2000. When it was at that point, I looked on his profile and saw some very unusual stats. He had about 125 wins, 1 draw, and ZERO losses!! I noticed that the bulk of his opponents were much lower rated than he was. He probably wasn't getting much more than 2-3 points per win. He would sometimes play opponents that were close to his rating, but he would almost never play anyone above his rating. By the time that his rating made it to the 2200's, he finally had (in my opinion allowed) his first loss. He had completed 150 or more games by the time this happened. His average opponent rating at that time was in the mid 1600's. This pattern of having a ridiculously high winning percentage coupled with a pitifully low average opponent rating continued until he reached his peak in the mid 2300's. By then, his average opponent rating was in the high 1700's. There are many instances of players on this site who play mostly lower rated opponents thinking that their overall rating will be higher if they play that way rather than playing opponents who are closer to, or above their rating. At first I thought this might just be a severe case of this, even though the 90+ winning percentage was suspicious. So I asked him casually in the chat box of one of our games why he insisted on playing mostly low rated opponents and why he didn't play more challenging ones. He completely ignored me. I thought something was really fishy at that point. Because as I said, he was very friendly and outgoing, so it struck me that he didn't want to answer a simple question like that. Looking back at the games we played, which wasn't very many, even though I didn't think about it at the time, (because I had so many games going on at once and didn't play this user very often) I did get a very subtle feeling at some point during a few of our games that I was playing a computer. Now those of you reading this might wonder what is so suspicious about a very high winning percentage and an extremely low average opponent rating. Well, if you think about it, if you wanted to obtain a relatively high rating by cheating, it would be much easier to get away with it by clobbering mostly low rated opponents. If your rating is only 1700, it isn't going to make a significant amount of difference whether you get beaten by a 2300 player versus getting beaten by a 2000 player. If you, the 1700 player, play both players consistently, you will find that you will win maybe 1/10 games at the most with the 2000 player whereas you would be lucky to win 1/100 games with the 2300 player. But only a couple of games would not be enough for the 1700 player to get a good feel of what the playing strengths are of both players since he will lose almost as badly in each game. Another reason why it would be easier to avoid detection by playing mostly low rated opponents is that higher rated opponents will have a much better ability to tell the difference between computer vs. human moves. So if a higher rated opponent is being cheated, he will be able to detect it much easier. Even though I can't say for 100% sure that he was a cheater, I suspect that that was the cause of BrainFactory's demise. The evidence that I provided was completely circumstantial. Like I said, the proof is in comparing the moves to what a chess engine recommends. This might very well be one of those cases where someone decided to make themselves look like a big shot on the internet. What else do you expect from someone named BrainFactory? This user bragged on his profile that he was working on a phd for physics at his university or something to that effect, I don't know, it has been many months since I last looked on his profile. So maybe he thought that that coupled with a very high online rating would make him look respectable on this site. So I want to know what you, the reader, thinks about this situation. Do BrainFactory's activities on this site seem fishy to you as they did with me? Also, what other subtle cues do you think you can pick up on to spot a cheater?
Hello Red Army People, With Chess.com's change to the new format some of the older photos now show distorted and blurred on profile pages as you may have noticed. We are attempting to update our old photo of the EPL trophy to one of the 2010-2011 trophy being hoisted by Man U's skipper:- Patrice Evra (unfortunately this year the trophy is adorned with blue ribbons) Here is the group photo we want to replace:- Please let us know whether our RA membership approve of this change so that we may bring the issue to staffers that the photo keeps reverting for some odd reason. Thank you RA Admin
Hi everyone! If I could have all member's, admin's, and super admin's opinion on whether or not Red Army is in for Team Match Open Seek Day, that would be great. For more info, click the link. http://www.chess.com/forum/view/general/team-match-open-seek-day If the head of the group could contact me with the final decision, that would be great. Thanks!

Should Red Army join? http://www.chess.com/groups/view/csc It's a two day per move tourney; I know we (members) favoured 3-day vote chess in a past forum, so please respond here if interested. Ideally, We need 30 or so teammates to commit to this. Thanks
