Happy 69 Day Everyone!!! Welcome to Season 3 of the Fortnight Speed Vote League!!! The Alien vs. Predator Season There have been a couple of changes made for Season 3. First of all, as most of you know, we are now on a monthly schedule which means that each team will only need to play one game per month rather than one game every 2 weeks. EVERY GAME MUST BE PLAYED WITHIN THE MONTH THAT IT IS SCHEDULED!!!You may NOT play your games ahead of schedule if you wish for that game to count!!! Secondly, there are no more divisions. The 5 teams you face will not be the same 5 your opponents face. This should produce more separation between teams with similar records (instead of each division mirroring each other). Standings will be based first on Total Score (3 points for a win, 1 point for a draw, 0 for a loss), then on Opponent's Strength (Chess.com's tournament tie-breaker system), and only if two teams are still tied will the First Blood rule take effect. I hope this makes everybody happy. I worked real hard on trying to address each of your concerns. We are constantly trying to improve the league so that everyone can have as much fun as possible. When I was making up the schedule, I did not pay any attention to group size, overall vote chess winning percentage, or leaderboard points. The stats I used were exclusively speed vote games. Groups were ordered by experience (# of games and length of games) and playing strength (win/loss record). I tried to make sure no one played a team that they played in a previous season, but in one case (Animal Lovers vs Chess Empire) it was unavoidable. I also tried to avoid any conflicts of interest by not scheduling 2 teams against each other who had a common administrator. But in a few cases, I couldn't help it. Sorry to Atudor (Chess Nuts vs Chess Unlimited) and Olympiakaras (Chess Unlimited vs Light Force). So many teams have made me an administrator, that it happened to me twice (Team Antarctica vs Burning Pawns; The Dark Knights vs Wallyjack's Wonderful Wizards of Oz). And finally, knowing everyone's time zone really did help a lot. I can't guarantee that everyone is playing against someone in the exact same time zone, but I did the best I could at grouping everyone together so that scheduling conflicts should be at a minimum. The 10 Minute Vote League will begin its third season in May. We are currently in the league. Are people interested in playing 10 Minute Vote games with other teams for another season, or should we go a different direction and concentrate on things that people are more interested in? For this to work, two things have to happen. One is, it can't just be me and Vudu all the time -- we have to eat, work, and sleep like everyone else. Manchero is a fanatic about 10 Minute vote chess, but he comes and goes for long periods of time depending on what his work is like. So, we need a good portion of the membership willing to come in and vote and help, even if it is only for an hour or two. That eliminates problems with drive-by voters. Also, another problem is that both me and Vudu live in similar time zones, which means that come Midnight American time, we are tired and worn out and ready to sleep. And many times, we are still in a heated battle with the other team. As stated above, Manchero is more than willing to help cover the times we are not able to be here, since he is in Japan, but that depends on his situation. So, we need at least two people from East Asia or Australia/Pacific Islands who have a reliable connection who would be willing to check in every 20 minutes starting at 8:00 a.m. local time and vote so that we don't time out. If there is sufficient interest, we will sign up for a third season. If not, we will go a different direction and figure out something else that the membership is more interested in. Edit: After I posted this, Burning Pawns messaged me about a possible practice game on the 10th of April. What we can do is accept this offer and see where we are at participationwise as well. It's your group; the more participation we get in that game, the more likely we are to continue to play in the 10 Minute League. It's a team game; it can't just be me and Vudu.

The Fortnight Speed Vote League Champions for Season 2 (The Frankenstein vs Dracula Season) are: Animal Lovers!! Congratulations!!! That's pretty good for a group that only entered Season 1 cuz we needed one more team to make 20. That's like the last kid to get picked for the team who ends up making the winning play. Animal Lovers finished the season with 6 wins, 1 loss, and 1 draw. Their 1 loss came in the regular season against Chess Unlimited, and their 1 draw came in the playoffs against Red Army. This is appropriate because in the regular season, Chess Unlimited beat Animal Lovers, Animal Lovers beat Red Army, and Red Army beat Chess Unlimited (ironically, all 3 games were won by black). All 3 made it to the playoffs. In the playoffs, they found themselves once again in the Semi-Finals, and once again, their opponent was the Chess Nuts!! This time however, it was the Animal Lovers who would be advancing to the Finals. No one knew who the Animal Lovers, the Cinderella team who barely squeaked into the playoffs last season, would face in the final round. Burning Pawns and Super Troopers waged a war that lasted for 138 moves (that's 2 moves longer than the combined total of Chess Nuts vs Animal Lovers last season)!!! Shock waves from that contest were felt all over the league. In the end, it was Burning Pawns who would take home the Silver Medal. The Grand Finale Game was doubly ironic since the Burning Pawns opened up with an opening named after an Animal, and the Animal Lovers ended up promoting a Pawn. This information was passed to us by Boris Spassky, who had just returned from Moscow. "Vasily was one of the great chess geniuses of the twentieth century," Spassky said. "For me there were four titans of chess in the Soviet Union after the Second World War: Botvinnik, Smyslov, Keres and Bronstein" Smyslov, Bronstein, Keres and Botvinnik in 1954 Vasily Vasiliyevich Smyslov was born on March 24, 1921. He learnt chess at the age of six, and after studying books in his father's library, became really serious about the game at the age of 13, when two world champions, Capablanca and Lasker, visited his native city of Moscow. At the age of 16 he won the All-Union boys' championship, and at 17 he shared first in the Moscow City Championship. At 19 he came third in the unrestricted USSR Championship. There followed a string of successes that caught the eye of world champion Alexander Alekhine, and he became internationally known when he beat Samuel Reshevsky twice in the famous USSR vs USA radio match in 1945.

There were no takers for the open tournament -- the chess.com thing for tournaments is crappy; I had to scroll through 13 pages to find mine. People would have had to look for it to find it. So, I'm doing closed thematics instead. I have been thinking about this some more and the best way to get new members in is through us. I'll do my part to recruit, but you're our best salesman -- if you're having fun here and you want to share it with friends, you're much more effective than I would be talking to the same person. There is plenty of interest in the closed tournaments, so I think I will keep them up. Right now, I'm taking requests for future thematics; if you have an opening that you would like to see played/discussed/worked on, then post it here. Here are the matchups for the Playoffs in Season 2: #1 Chess Nuts vs #8 Light Force #2 Burning Pawns vs #7 Chess Unlimited #3 Super Troopers vs #6 Fast Players Group #4 Animal Lovers vs #5 Red Army It looks like we had 4 teams with 7 points (2-1-1 record). 2 of them made it into the playoffs, and 2 of them didn't. If we didn't have the First Blood System, we'd be playing a whole lot of Tie-Breaker games (6 of them) and the Playoffs would be delayed almost 2 months. There'd be another 4 Tie-Breaker Games if you wanted to sort out the rest of the playoff standings too (2 teams with 12 points (4-0) and 3 teams with 9 points (3-1)).

I think a creedo or charter would be a much better way of having everyone to get together as a team and agree to a common code which we should all contribute to and all follow. Each post can be judged on their merits and at the end the admins can select the better components of the creedo and create a charter for us and all future members to follow. We the good members of the Manchester United RED ARMY will promise on the pain of expulsion to: Wear my Manchester United football top under my clothes at all times even when I begin to smell a bit rank rotten or ranker than usual.

This was a stunning three-piece sacrifice which left Black biting the dust. The first piece sac was not totally correct -- White had an obvious win whereas Black might have held. But the other two piece sacs were totally sound. It arose out of the London System, supposedly one of White's tamest replies. Black paid the price for excessively exposing his King.
