Ok what I want to do is to have openings listed in a methodical way with each variation having a list of games under it. For example Repertoire:- Sicilian White- Sicilian Schevengenin (Pardon my spelling) Classical Variation Games I can't do it with Scid although I have Chess Position Trainer Its not a database. Does anyone know a free software to do this?
Pizzapier....you said: I ask chess.com for a PGN and I get a Scid file. I have a screen shot in Paint, but it does not copy to this post. Chess.com did not send you a SCID file. Your pc has associated all PGN files with SCID, thus when you receive a PGN, your pc says its SCID file . You can right click the pgn file and select to open with notepad etc. OR you can just uninstall scid if you will not be using it as your default PGN viewer.

This partially depends on what you have now. Do you have a .pgn file saved in a folder, or do you have a pgn you have copied to your clipboard?
If a black pawn is taken off the board, a white pawn appears on the right side of the board. Is this a glitch or am I missing something. I thought the removed pieces were displayed.

Is there a way in SCID vs Mac to print a copy of the board position?

I have a pgn file with comments, I've tried adding my own comments, used Control + Enter to close the window as Help directs, but the comments are not saved. What am I doing wrong?

Is it possible to dock all/some of the windows? It is really annoying, all these little windows all over the show, and you cant easily switch between applications. Maybe I must just stick with the normal old interface....
Hello, Scid users -- Can Scid show me the engine's next recommended move highlighted on the main chessboard? It would be much easier to see the suggested move if it were highlighted on the main chess board, rather than seeing the lines in PGN format in the engine window. Is this possible in Scid? Thanks, -Nate
New to SCID. Checked Help, but did not find an answer to my question. When I perform a search, say on a KID position. Results are displayd, some are light gray, some are darker gray. Clicking on either loads the game. What is the difference in the two? Thanks

I think we should support great free software like SCID. ChessBase Light really suppresses the popularity of SCID, I think, but SCID is better than CBL. I've programmed in TCL and I'm wondering if anyone knows anything about extending SCID. I do agree that a lot of things in SCID are counterintuitive and perhaps we could come up with some cheat sheets and tutorials, perhaps with a direction to modifications of SCID to make common operations easier. I'd like to see the PGN features improved as I find this the most widely used and flexible import/export format.
Hi, I recently borrowed an Everyman "Starting out Kings Indian" CD ROm/book from a friend of mine. He recommended that I use CBlight to read it (as it has both the book as PDF and the games as files, so you can, effectively, "play through the book") - does anyone know if these can be used in SCID instead? Thanks, Russell
Howdy Greenhorns, As you're new to SCID you'll be wondering where all the lovely free GM game databases are. Well, as they don't come with the program, you're going to have to get creatin' and knock-up your own. Helpfully, before any of you click "uninstall", there are libraries of games in PGN format which are just lying around, waiting for you to download them, for free(!!). So get cracking. The most popular DB downloads are: Norm Pollock's Collection The Massive 1.74 million Game DB (Once upzipped, prepare thyself for a whopping 192mb of chess knowledge to be unleashed upon your hard drive.) Both of which should be supplemented/updated with issues of New in Chess, and This Week in Chess (Download the "PGN" option - which is the "x" in box 4 on the TWIC webpage). If any of the SCID Elders in the group know of any better DBs going around then please reveal your secrets. Until the next time I think of something beginner-ish, all the best, Russell
Is there a limit of how many games can be in a Scid database?
Hi all, It's been a while since I've used SCID, so I'm trying to catch up. Can anyone help with regards to tablebases? How to use them? Do they come with SCID or do you download them from elsewhere? Apologies if this is simple, but I've only been using SCID to keep an eye on my databases, and looking at masters' games, so everything else is a bit of a mystery to me... Cheers!
I am wondering if anyone else has the problem I have with SCID jumping in front of other applications due to a mouse over. I find that very annoying and I'm asking if anyone knows a setting which will defeat that?

Hello, I recently started using Scid because I run Linux and it's so far the most powerful database search / game playing program. I recently configured scid to use Toga, but I cannot get Toga to display mutliple lines. I was able to easily get Stockfish to display mutliple lines by going into Tools....analysis engine.....Toga, then clicking "Edit", then clicking "Configure UCI Engine", and selecting 2 for Multiple Variations. I press "Save", then "Update", but I only see one variation from the Toga output. Any ideas? Thanks, --Nate

Hi, I'm running SCID 4.3 under Win 7 Pro 64bit on an Intel i5 (quad core). When doing post-game analysis the engine uses 100% CPU on all 4 cores. Is this normal? Surely the free engines aren't multithreaded? I'd expect 100% on a single core only. Thanks, Mark

Hi, I've been directed to this group as I've recently downloaded the programme, but I'm struggling with actually using it. I think, if it seems feasible, I could put together a beginner's guide here on the forum, but I'm going to need help from you more advanced users. So the questions I'd like to ask are: 1) How do you load the spell-check and opening routine that can be downloaded from the main SCID website? 2) How do you upload a games collection into a database - and how do you make it non-read only. (There is a guide to this on the website, but I couldn't get mine to work using the instructions.) 3) Can you have more than 9 databases for SCID? For what I'd like to do I'd need more than 9. Can you have, say 20, but only use a maximum of 9 at one point? 4) How do you create a new database? 5) How do you upload games to this DB and save them there? 6) How do you move games from one database to another - do you end up duplicating the one you move, or does one move to the other and therefore it's gone from the original? 7) What good websites are there for free game collections? And how do you upload them in a non-read only format? 8) Is it possible that when starting SCID it automatically opens up a DB, i.e. you don't have to load one up after opening SCID? 9) Where do you save your DBs normally - which subfolder of SCID do you use? 10) Are there better, free, engines that Toga? That'll do it for now I think. I do realise that some of these questions are really, really basic, but I've tried using the help, and to no avail. If someone can explain in layman's terms what I need to do for the above then better. Thanks for the help & the patience, Russell
