Hi, I'm relatively new to these unorthodox openings and I was wondering if I could get a little help with with choosing which ones to start with - by no means do I want beginner openings because I'm getting started, I wouldn't mind challenging my self with the ultra difficult ones.. Anyway, I suppose I'm looking for openings that are extremely unorthodox, very rare and unconventional that completely throw the person i'm playing out of the book yet still quite strong. oh and one that last in longer gameplay situations?? Thank you very much

Hello all! Today, Shuffleking74 and I played a few games on live chess, and I thought'd I share them on here. I encourage other members to comment on what you feel we did well or not so well. Enjoy! The first game features a win from Sir Shuffle: The next features a win from me:

Hello group, i just annotated a Bird game (which classifies as Unorthodox imho ), maybe someone can get some benefit out of it and feedback is of course welcome, you can find it here: http://blog.chess.com/sirprim (Title: Banking on a single error) Thanks for listening, Sebastian (sirprim)
My favorite unorthodox opening to use is the Hippo. I think it's great because it throws people off and because it can get prett positional, which is my strong area of chess. My weakest area is the opening. My middlegame and endgame skills are great; they're nothing to brag about though. I've been playing chess for a year and a half and I'm hoping to be a professional one day. Here's a few recent Hippo wins of mine. Please take a look and tell me what I did right and wrong. Enjoy!

Has anyone ever tried this fork trick?
I recently learned about this very unorthodox opening for black and decided to give it a try in the ongoing team match: http://www.chess.com/echess/game.html?id=30517813 http://www.chess.com/opening/eco/A04_Zukertort_Opening_Arctic_Defense_Drunken_Knight_Variation
Okay, are you ready for this? This will seem so rediculous and impossible that you will wonder why I mentioned it. Surprisingly enough, it is listed as an opening for thematic tournaments. Take a deep breath now, hold it for a few seconds, let it out slowly through the nose. Drumroll please.... 1.d5 I am not kidding about this. This should qualify as unorthodox :) Just make sure to make the move before the other players notice.
Here, my opponent played, in my opinion, a very strange opening even by unorthodox standards. I won this, but only because he played very bad moves. I probably made some dubious moves too, but I believe I out-played him here. I could be wrong, though. What do you guys think?

I lost this one. I think I did okay in the opening, but completely blew the middlegame and endgame.

This time, I played against the Grob and won.

Okay, I have a few obscure variations and a few more well known variations you can use versus the Caro-Kann. These are all playable for white. 1.e4 c6 2.Nc3 d5 3.Qf3-Goldmann Variation 1.e4 c6 2.Nf3 d5 3.Nc3-Two Knights Variation 1.e4 c6 2.d4 d5 3.f3-Fantasy (Tartakower) Variation 1.e4 c6 2.d4 d5 3.e5 Bf5 4.g4-Spike Variation 1.e4 c6 2.d4 d5 3.e5 Bf5 4.Nc3 e6 5.g4-Delayed Spike Variation 1.e4 c6 2.d4 d5 3.e5 Bf5 4.h4-Tal Variation All of these lines takes black out of their theory and the idea is to make them uncomfortable as Caro-Kann players are not looking for a tactical slugfest out of the opening. You should have a pyschological advantage and a theoretical advantage as you know the lines better. Enjoy!
A few more obscure variations against the caro-kann. Alekhine Gambit 1.e4 c6 2.d4 d5 2.Nc3 dxe4 3.Nxe4 Nf6 5.Bd3 Anti-Caro-Kann 1.e4 c6 2.c4 Gurgenidze Counterattack 1.e4 c6 2.d4 d5 3.Nc3 b5 Rasa-Studier Gambit 1.e4 c6 2.d4 d5 3.Nc3 dxe4 4.f3 Hillbilly Attack-Schaeffer Gambit 1.e4 c6 2.Bc4 d5 3.Bb3 dxe4 4.Qh5 g6 5.Qh4 Nf6 6.Nc3 Bg7 7.f3

this is the {insert my last name here} variation of the Caro-Kann How do you guys like it
How about this for a change? I am trying to use 3... dxe4 instead of 3... Nf6 and 3... Bb4. Some possible lines?

Hey fellow unorthodox openers, why don't we try to use the Kangaroo (Keres) Defence in some of our vote and online matches? This mainly has value as a shock weapon but has its advantages in the fact that White has already played 2. c4 and so cannot play 3. c3 to block the bishop. White's legal responses are: 3. Nc3 Nf6 transposes to a Nimzo-indian. 3. Nd2 Nf6 4. Nc3 transposes to a Bogo-Indian (groan!) 3. Bd2 forces an exchange and 3... Bxd2+ 4. Nxd2 Nf6 5.Nf3 is another Bogo-Indian (bigger groan!) 3. Qd2?? loses a queen.

First of all, I'm new to the group. Hello everyone. The bongcloud is probably the most unorthodox of all chess lines, but very interesting. 1.e4 e5 2.Ke2 Yes, the K stands for king, not knight. Bongcloud can be loosely used to define any opening that activates the king in the first few moves, the theory being 16 attacking peices are better than 15. What is this groups opinon on this opening as far as using it succesfully in play goes?

Ok, this game is full of mistakes, I even managed to lose a piece, but it was really fun to play :).

A chess miniature I just finished playing on Online (correspondence) chess. It's not quite unorthodox, but I felt it worthy of being posted here. What do you guys think?
