Detailed standings from each year's main competition.

2009–2010

The first attempt at an English County Championship was seemingly abandoned in late 2010.

2011

In 2011, teams were placed into leagues according to their number of members. As far as I can tell, this was meant to be a ranking, making Group A the highest division.

2013–14

It seems that the three-division system was abandoned in favour of a single division, owing to a drop in participants. At least, I can't find a record of any Division 2.

1st Sussex
2nd Gloucestershire
3rd Staffordshire

2013–14

It seems that this cup was never finished. Yorkshire seemed to beat Sussex in their semi-final on the countback rule, and Staffordshire beat Lancashire in a quarter-final, but this may or may not have been reversed after fair play violations. Whoever won, Worcestershire never played them in their semi-final, and no one played Yorkshire in a final. Possibly, this makes Yorkshire technical cup winners, entitling them to one, possibly two handles.

Updated for the new season, with new map and timeline to boot.

Interesting facts (if you find this sort of thing interesting):

  • With Devon's relegation, no team has participated in the top division in every Championship. Sussex now holds the longest streak (since 2014)
  • 2020 is the first year the Championship has more teams than its first full season in 2011.

I was inspired recently to have another go at finding out what happened to the Championship in 2012 and 2013, which I previously thought were dead years as there's no record of a finished tournament in the group forums or notes. However, @horsechessnut has managed to dig up a final table for the 2012 tournament in Sussex's forums, which I've pasted below for posterity. This means that Yorkshire Terriers can add a trophy to their cabinet (congrats!),

From what I've seen, I think that the 2012 league took longer than expected to finish, with some matches starting summer 2013, and the results decided at the end of 2013. Around the same time, the '2013-14' season started, which is what I've had listed as the 2014 season. With 2012 and 2013 now accounted for, we seem to have a complete record for the open league. Thanks very much, fellow chess archaeologists, for your help!

Now to find out what happened to the 2013-14 cup final...

The chart and the map was a little more work this year, but here they are.

And that's by far the most filled-out the map has ever been. All the red (Division 4) teams were blank spaces last year so thank you to all the teams and admins who've helped us expand the league.

Another year, another infographic, as the saying goes.

The expansion to five tiers this year was a challenge, partly because of the behind-the-scenes logistics involved, but mostly because it meant I had to try to find five colours that are still colourblind-friendly. (Anyone with colourblindness want to give me some feedback?)

On the upside, it's turned this year's map into the world's most confusing pride flag, and I'm all for it.
