Makes me think the pawns, knights and bishops on pic#4 were part of your first set.
I can’t help but be impressed with the development of the lathe work on your last picture. The number of bands on the pawn, bishop, queen and king pieces have doubled.

Oh yes, I was wrong when I uploaded the pictures, I changed the post and now they are correct.

Thanks to everyone, all the pieces are made with a simple metal lathe reconverted into a wood lathe and are totally handcarfted. You can see the difereces between the pieces if you do a closer look, specially at the pawns so you could realise they are not perfect and not identically to the others.

The raw wood I use is from my house, boxwood for the white and stained cherry wood for the black. The boxwood used is from thin branches so they all have the center of growing lines into the piece, To avoid this I would need larger boxwood trunks.

And Chessroboto thanks for the link, a thread I was looking for before posting and never found!

You’re welcome.
BTW I did notice the slightly varying heights of the pawns, but I attributed them to your practice runs.
As a maker, its expected that your workspace is littered with parts, prototypes and samples. Just ask Izmet of BCE fame!

Do you make the boards as well?

All the boards are also made by me except the one in the first set.

Yes, it is because they're handmade  and how quickly I made them because it was a Christmas present!

spartakbarnsley and Aida_Amin, Thanks!!

I'm also curious about the history of this set!

Some time ago I made a review https://www.chess.com/forum/view/chess-equipment/help-identifying-a-very-attractive-vintage-chess-set

I dont know anything about history of this set! Can someone help me?

I can tell you that it's 99.9% definitely NOT from the USSR!  But apart from that I don't really have any ideas. The lack of cross on the king could suggest it's from the former Communist world, but that is still a lot of countries to choose from.

Thank you for this information!

Hello chess lovers,

after I have passively read along in this forum for a longer time and especially marvel at the beautiful chess sets, I would like to show some of my sets here and in the next posts.

I am from Germany and have been playing passionately for over 50 years. During this time I have accumulated a lot of books and sets

I am especially grateful to the forum for the suggestions and to the various manufacturers of noble but nevertheless affordable chess pieces.

Here my Chess pieces from East Germany (late 50s). Heavily weighted, King size 9,2 cm.

The following set is from the company Royal Chess Mal.

@J

Classic reproduction of the old Staunton form, moderately weighted, but nice to look at.

@J

Alekhine is said that he liked to use weighted figures as wuffs when he was defeated.

@J

He would have been especially pleased with the massive towers of the set.

Another guy with an eye for superb pieces! Great collection.

Some figure sets are hyped. Take for example the Dubrovnik sets or the smaller knubble sets.

Larsen liked to analyze with the small handy knubble set. I like to analyze - of course on a much lower level - with the classic Bohemia sets from the 70s.

J

These are weighted and you can get them on Ebay for little money. So this is a good alternative!

Love this wonderful design and feeling. Look at the elaborate workmanship of the board with the decorative veins. This is a dream.

StauntonCollector

Here my newest set of pieces. It is a reproduction of the first Staunton figure design from 1849.

The figures are from Chess Bazaar, a description can be found at

https://www.chessbazaar.com/reproduced-1849-original-staunton-pattern-chess-set-in-ebony-boxwood-with-king-side-stamping-3-75-king.html

The figures are small and handy, extremely weighted and fit very well on boards with field edge 50 - 50 mm.

The photo shows the set on a RPF board with 55 mm edge length.

I love the design, the clarity and fantastic workmanship. The set is not cheap, but worth every cent!

StauntonCollector

This set is from "Staunton Castle".

It is a big, but still very elegant looking set.

The workmanship is stunningly good, the figures fit very well in the hand.

The clarity of the game is excellent, I am very satisfied with this set and can only recommend it.

The board is from Chess Bazaar and looks good at first sight. I have had better experiences with the relatively cheap boards from RPF.

One of my favorite sets! Love it

These figures are also from Staunton Castle.

I like the clear simple design very much, the weighting feels good.

The green board (here with 55mm field size) is from my favourite chessboard manufacturer. RPF from Spain. I like the precise robust finish, the acid finish with the protective lacquer not only looks good, but also effectively protects the board from scratches.

@StauntonCollector: Some really great sets there. Particularly like the 3.75" 1849 set. Need to get one myself!😊

StauntonCollector

One of my most beautiful figurine sets and also one of the cheapest!

This one is also from Staunton Castle.

These small handy figurines are very well weighted, the design and execution couldn't be better for my taste.

These figures fit perfectly on boards with 50 mm edge length. I photographed the figures with two different boards.

Board 1 is made of maple and walnut, the backside is completely covered with felt. This is still real high quality work of the company Bohemia from West Germany in the early 80s.

Take a look at the elaborate workmanship of the decorative vein, the beautiful patina has been added free of charge over the years. happy.png

Board 2 also has 50 mm field size and is from RPF.

I bought this board at the German dealer "Schach Niggemann". This company offers a very good service and is absolutely recommendable.

StauntonCollector

Here again a vintage set from the early 70s.

I got this set in 1971 and I guard it like an eyeball. I did my first serious chess lessons and theory studies with this set of pieces.

The manufacturer was the German company "Bayerwald". King height is 9cm, the pieces are weighted. The matching transport case made of imitation leather still exists.

I especially like the original simple design of the knights. What do you think?

The board used for the illustration is from RPF with 50 mm field size.

StauntonCollector

Another Bohemia set from the 70s.

King height 8,5 cm, weighted, figures made of walnut wood.

The board used for the illustration is from RPF with 50 mm field size.
