Thanks for those links artfizz. I wasn't entirely sure what I was asking, but they've shed some light on the matter and I can see very clearly that the whole issue is rather murky ...
I may come back to it at a later date - perhaps in my next life when I'm both a GM and website developer.
This may be a daft question, but I'm just beginning to try and develop an opening repertoire/learn some openings, so I'm interested:
In a current game, my opponent has transposed into the Gruenfeld Defence, but because he didn't get there through the normal sequence the Chess.com explorer doesn't flag it as the Gruenfeld. It's annoying to me (as someone who is trying to learn openings) that somewhere in the explorer window the position is not identified as a Gruenfeld (e.g. it would really help when I go to my opening books for advice).
I suppose this is in part a suggestion to Chess.com, but If there is clear reasoning behind it not being so, would someone please explain?.
Also, does this mean that transposing to a particular opening position, rather than following a particular sequence, nullifies its ECO? Like I said, I'm new to all this stuff so explanation would be much appreciated...
