Is it possible?

Yes. All you have to do is fork the rook and king with your queen and then you win.

Easier to explain than to achieve. For me, it's the hardest endgame. Try it against the engine. It's no picnic.

Sure, thanks

The book "Secrets of Pawnless Endings" delves into this at great length. There are some "fortress" positions that the person with the Queen must try to avoid. Time pressure in an OTB game has even forced GMs to agree to a draw in matches.

You can also skewer... Or pin if the pin is diagonal

It's quite difficult to mate with the queen... however the main goal should be to reach a Philidor position (1777 I believe)

So, treat the queen like a rook. But there's no pawn on the board. Can you show me or link me to the Philador position with queen vs. rook without the pawn? I'm studying this because someday I'll get to play endgames. happy

Tysm for replying to my forum guys. I have some idea about philidor but being able to get to this position is beyond my current limits. As a person who has studied the basic openings I felt it was crucial to start endgame study. Idk for some reason I thought 1Queen vs 1Rook will be the starting point after basic endgames of the king alone but turns out there is a lot to learn. Now I know I should have started with pawn endgames or opponent having minor piece endgames. Hope I'll reach this level one day.

The rook Philidor position is different than this one; this is the position I'm talking about and I'll annotate how it's winning

Wow! I need to relearn my triangulation skills. Thank you so much!

Long ago, I play with my mom and I thought the queen and king is the rook protect by king
