White has first move advantage. Statistics don't lie, White wins more often than Black thus it's better to play as White.
The exception are players who play better as Black, but still the difference is only small.

not exactly. A master might join but put himself on a 'new to chess' level, so if he plays like a 1400 rated player on his first game, he will win

i find that almost always, at least at my level black can gain control of moving first so i say it doesnt matter much , as long as you capitalize on your opportunities. unless your playing a high level computer or a great grand master. the opportunities will exist. personally i like playing from a disadvantage it makes me look harder to find things
