Chess for Oldtimers --- Good Idea !

Thanks for the recent post Motherinlaw. Ah yes, the age old question: should one be just another member of the pack or perhaps one could try to be a stand-out as a lone wolf. I think that I would be in the " Outlier " group as I'm reminded every time that I move. I have to drag along piles of books and magazines ( & old LP Records ) that I started to collect in my mid-teens. Plus in more recent years I've added more " stuff " in the form of VHS tapes and DVDs. I guess that each one of us must struggle along our path in life as best we can but I do know that moving these darn items around gets harder as I get older. Smile

They say that a task for the last 1/3 of life is to get rid of stuff, not accumulate more.  Or as we chessplayers would say, "Simplify, and play a winning endgame."

If you want to see the same conversations over and over again look at the posts responding to the guy who wants an opening named after him.

Thanks for the recent posts ( that is all except for Pellik of course  lol ).

Pellik: That is the 3rd or 4th time that you have posted the same item here  ( either you are getting a bad memory or you are testing us ). So why are you hanging around this thread with the older folks ? Are you lost or are you just trying to be a pain in the neck ? Or perhaps you are busy trying to think up something constructive to add to this thread ?

EDIT: I've checked thru this thread Pellik. You have left posts on pages 14,18,19 & 20 but nothing that you have said adds anything useful to this thread. Comments ?

That's because we keep forgetting what we said last time.

That's one thing to be said in favor of senility... everything seems fresh and new. You can't get bored if your memory has stopped working.

Us oldsters sometime forget what we said because, after all these years, our brains are full!

I had a great respond to this, but unfortunately, I forgot.

I can never remember to play them.

I am missing something... Would you all repeat what you are posting?

cabadenwurt

Thanks for all of the new posts.

Ponz111: Thanks, I got a chuckle out of that one !

Pellik: Ok I will concede to your point there. So if you want to keep on teasing and/or testing us then go right ahead.

Wow, common sense! (I wonder if they've done any definitive studies on that yet). Smile

If it improves your mind, why are my games rotting?

cabadenwurt

Ok Conflagration_Planet the time has come to ask you some questions as this " Chess thing " seems to bother you ( I've just looked back at Pages 24 & 25 ). Have you ever had a Chess coach, either on-line or in your area where you live ? How much time do you spent in studying Chess ? How many OTB games do you play per month ( & how many on the internet ) ? As many people have said here on this site you need to WORK hard to improve. Or you need to RELAX and just play for fun ( which will it be ? ).

You just reminded me that I am Grand Master of the Procrastination Society, which I'll get around to founding one day soon  --  maybe.

Have I ever had a chess coach? No, of course not. Chess coaches are for talented, higher rated players who hope to play in tournies, and are very ambitious. Hoping to achieve a title, I mean. Nobody else in their right mind, would spend that kind of money on something that will never be anything more than a board game to them. Never played OTB, but do play on here, and do TT. Most on here get to at least 14 or 1500 without chess coaches, etc.

I didn't mean to pry but it seems that this Game of Chess is bothering you a bit. I do have a thread on the go here for average players. Some of us might not be good at Chess, perhaps because our talents lie in other areas. The trick of course is to find out which area ( or areas ) that our talents do lie in.

Chess isn't going to help when dementia inevitably kicks in.

EDIT: Corrected spelling

The first sign it's setting in, is when you spell it "dimensia." Smile

thedeliveryman

It's actually the first sign of a lousy speller.  ;)
