Coaching

I don't think someone that plays mostly bullet should coach unless they're good.

I did this instead of doing my homework. Oh well, I don't have school today anyways.

This wasn't targeted at you. But your thread did spur me to write something about it... @chesswithnickolay is guilty too.

Well, I guess I am sorry for that. You guys just flood me with comments that made me very mad. It's pretty much my choice if I want to coach or not, and you just making those comments aren't really helping.

i mean its free speech, you can coach, but you wont get any students when ur 900 in rapid and charge 25 bucks an hour.

my gm coach only charges 40 bucks.

like  b r u h

I changed it to only 5 dollars = 1 hour with discounts bro. And I am underrated in rapid, I don't play that often.

How many students you have so far, and what are their ratings?

i feel like u shouldnt coach unless ur atleast 1500 or 1600, or you were recommended by someone else

i used to have a chess coach that was like 1700 or 1800, and i learned a ton from him

I've been on the forums for so long I'd say I have no life. During these times I've seen many silly coaching forums, usually made by lower rated players. The epitome of silliness was when I saw a thread started by a... wait for it... 1000 rated player.

Like, what are you going to teach your students? wait, let me go back to the start. WHO is going to be your student? Some 500 rated player? What are you gonna teach them? How to move the pieces? I seriously doubt a 1000 rated player is capable of understanding the Nd2-f1-g3 knight maneuver in the ruy lopez/italian game, which just so happens to be a very simple concept. Most likely 1000 rated players do not know what they are doing in the middlegame... playing moves like a3 or h3 because they do not understand the position.

Is that what you are going to teach your students? "Oh, I played a3 in this position because it was my move" "Oh I played h3 to hit the bishop, then I played g4 because it attacked my bishop even though I castled kingside"

If the prospective coach is around 1500+ rating then that should be fine, at least. You may know some maneuvers but I do not believe 1500s have a well rounded enough chess education to be coaching others - especially if those others have a drastically different playstyle.

Example: if you're a 1.e4 gambit player and love tactical shots and opposite side castling, I highly doubt you are going to be able to handle any sort of Carlsbad position properly. Chances are the 1500 may try to launch a kingside attack with h4-h5 instead of the minority attack, leading to a quick loss (because black is the one attacking on the kingside).

And going over the game the player will be like "oh no, why did I lose? engine says h4 is bad, but I don't understand. why is a3 the best move?

So, you might ask. What is the point of this really long rant? Well, if you're under 1500 I'd say don't think about coaching. Your rating isn't high enough. You do not have the chess skills needed to coach others, and if you do chances are you'll coach them badly, so that they'll have to unlearn what they have learned. And chances are, the low rated "coach" will simply be repeating what they've heard without really understanding:

"Don't push the f pawn, it weakens your king" « very common example.

And No, I'm not being toxic. Being toxic is making fun of you for trying to help others. But here, I believe coaching is a waste of your time (for both the coach and his/her student) if the coach has a rating sub-1500. Would you rather have me butter them up, saying "omg you're soooo coach material you'll be great my guy" and then they become depressed when they realize, "hey, coaching is really hard, my student doesn't really understand me most of the time, I have to prepare lessons for the next class, I have to know my material, etc..." And if you do have that work ethic, that's great.

But it doesn't change the hard truth. I can't say this without sounding mean, but if you're bad at chess you have no business coaching people.

Report me if you want but you're not fooling anyone but yourself.

Me who plays Vienna and pushes f pawn every game ... 😶

Hey ya'll. Just seen this form, and I just wanted to say, it was all a joke. Lol, it was actually suppose to get attention, and it did it job. Being rude and immature in that form was really all it was, and to see what the response was. (It was actually pretty fun to type and read all the comment)

What?
