Is it possible to become GM without coaching ?

Sort:

I am 22 years old. I aspire to become a GM. Can I become one without taking help from any chess tutor? I will improve my game by playing as many games as I can and also solve lot of chess puzzles. My aim is to become GM by the year 2020. I am working very hard. I do not have a FIDE rating yet. My chess.com rating is less because I lose many games on time. My game is stronger than my chess.com rating. My question is- Is coaching necessary to achieve my goal or only playing with strong players is sufficient ?

You aren't becoming a GM in 3 years. You aren't becoming a GM ever in your life. And yes, I looked at some of your games.

Somebody has to tell you the truth so you get your priorities in order.

Maybe you are right. But I will keep trying.

Yes, you can. I have aligned the stars and calculated that the years match up with ELO ratings. So right now, we should all be at a 2017 rating. If you aren't, get to work. You can study games of Smoobachuk and other greats in the meantime. Here is a link to another related thread.

I went through the link. It was interesting. I did not understand your logic about the rating being same as the years. If that were true, I will become a GM in the year 2500 because that is the minimum rating required to be a GM.

You've played thousands of games on this site and you're rated in the 1400s and talking about being a GM in another 3 years. Without coaching.
Be serious.

You're playing actively and well and better than your rating but I see mistakes and no sign that you're GM material.

If you were going to be a GM in 3 years then your play would already be dazzling at this point and it's far from that.

It's as if people don't respect the GM title as they ought.

The OP should if he hasn't already, join a chess club and get a realistic perspective.

Hey! You know that if you want to be a grandmaster, you have to be a 1800 rated player first! You should work hard, and study hard, and try to get to 1800 on this website (rapid play, where your maximum rating was 1700, and right now 1500).

I think it will be pretty hard for you to be a GM though, to be honest...

but you should try to be a regular master first, before a GM. It's a lot easier! So good luck being a chess master, because I think that's definitely possible.

Here are some other threads by the OP on this subject. Decide for yourselves.

I am unbeatable

GMs play like average players

Can I become a GM?

Also, I looked at some of your games. They're not bad, but you have a lot of room to get better! Maybe you shouldn't try to think too much about GM, but instead just go step by step! Like gain 100 points at a time, and soon you'll be a master, and then you can think about grandmaster

Thanks for your feedback guys ! I will work hard. I left education for chess. I don't intend to do a job anytime in future. I want to take up chess as a full time profession. If I do not succeed in chess, life will be difficult for me .

yes you can, .. believe that you can .... and you can be ... good luck

the good thing with coaching is that you can be a GM faster .. by the way i am not a GM, because

Most here will probably say you are fool. I won't because I think most educational courses are a genuine waste of time.

It is close to impossible for you to earn a living from chess. You won't become a GM, but you will develop a way of thinking that may be more useful than a worthless piece of paper or certification.

You may have the drive to be successful with something else, but it isn't chess, trust me. The fact that you gave up education for chess is a sign of bravery. Trust me there are more titled chess players than there are brave men. You haven't found your true calling yet.

Why do you need to do this without coaching - do you really hate all chess coaches for some reason?

I agree with Urk. I think you will have a lot more fun if you don't try to be a GM.

For example, make your goal to be 1600. At that rating, you could easily crush everyone you have trouble against now. And isn't that all anyone really wants anyways?

Given that you claim chess is your life though...

Yeah I hate chess coaches. There are many reasons. I have taken coaching from 2 trainers in the past. I was not benefitted as I wanted. Also, all chess coaches at every level, including Garry Kasparov teach their students using chess books and engines. Are the students illiterate to need someone to teach them from books ?? Can't they read the books themselves and learn ? What is the need of a coach when you can read the books on your own ? I agree that I need someone to recommend me good chess books. Beyond that I do not need a coach. These are my thoughts. Correct me if I am wrong.

Are you sure about this?

Not 100% sure, but I think so. Indian GM coach Raghunandan Gokhale teaches from books only that I know.

You are wrong.  You are smart enough to correct yourself. All you need do is use your undoubted intelligence to work it out, rather than for making impossible plans (if you are serious) or trolling the forums (if you aren't serious).

I am not trolling. I am serious. I was removed from college recently. If you want to know the reason, message me personally. I cannot post here because some of my friends might read it and they will tell everyone near me and my reputation will be spoiled.
