I haven't played chess for over 50 years. I feel that many folks are "put off" by just that attitude and the deadly seriousness of the competition and feel uncomfortable in an environment where they may not be welcomed as intellectual equals. I hope I'm wrong about that here.

Yes. Play whenever you want. There are many players here that stink, but choose to get into debates about openings, endgames, etc.

Just play.

Why is it called, "PLAYING?"  There is a forum topic.  Playing implies having "fun."

heheheh, you guys in silicon vallye are pretty lucky to have so many good players,  here in florida, with an elo   of 1350, i'm proud to say , i'm the best player in the state.

There is definitely a difference it seems to me to in the mind sets of peeps in those two states. I think if the geography and size of Florida were more comparable to Cali, you'd notice more competition, from your in state rivals.

chess needs more creative expression, instead of "same old... same old"

and more redheads like yourself, George!

Looks like a nice way to enjoy a game for two, in a secluded place. I would have to have slow burning candles though, but not because I can't play fast...

welcome to the real world; i'm not a great player either but I still find it fun. as long as i can keep learning and improving my game, I'm okay with it. Don't worry about people who think you are not their "equal." they may not have much else going for them, other than bragging in forums like this

you quoted the wrong post

no, that was the post i meant to quote - the guy who felt he was in over his head with "intellectuals" etc on the website.

How do you pick a fight with a redhead?

Answer:  Just say something.

How can you tell when someone is a thick and a bigot?

They make nasty jokes about red heads because they would not dare make one about any other group.

You need to think in chess :)

The vast majority of the feedback  pertained to non thinking as being the most popular reason as to why larger numbers utilise an array of board games more frequently.

I have concluded, (whether right or wrong), that chess is indeed a force and alive and healthy.

Salute!

"Boner pic" ???? what are you talking about?  I never posted something offensive.   I will say, however, if you have been playing chess for 50 years, your photo does not display that.

chess requires thinking and is much harder to "master" than, say, Monopoly.  People (esp in the U.S.) don't want to work that hard; we want to be entertained; there is not nearly as much luck in chess, other than blunders by an opponent. Poker does require skill, but you can win money, hence its popularity in the U.S., given our greed and materialism.

Chess is cerebral; we are too busy buying humvees and suv's and homes we cannot afford; no time for chess.

Damn, never read so much self-criticism.

Yeah.  I also must say that (in my experience at least) the game was most elitist and least casual in grade school.
