Actually, it is "us", not "we". "Us" is a direct object. (Sorry, it's hard to resist correcting grammar sometimes!)
Don't mean to be antagonizing, but I believe you are mistaken. I'm sure you are familiar with the phrase: "we the people" right? Obviously, it is not "us the people."
There are many other examples I could give as well, but the correct grammar is actually "we" in this case. Just because it is a common error, that doesn't mean that "us" is correct simply because it is said somewhat frequently
