The haloween gambit! Learn the spookiest opening!
Classic 4 knight game, e4, e5, Nf3, Nc6, Nc3, Nf6, Nxe5??? WHAT?
Well folks, this strange opening is called the HALLOWEEN GAMBIT!
So why Nxe5? Sacrificing a knight for a pawn. Well this is called an opening trap.
An opening trap is when you did unexpected moves for a certain goal, here are 2 perfect examples:
Italian game, knight attack variation.
In this position, any move that is not d5 is bad for black.
Or this other position which is very common:
So now that you know what is an opening trap, what exacly is the halloween gambit? And what even is a gambit?
A gambit is when you sacrifice a piece (more commonly a pawn) for a certain goal, here is an example:
In this position, white sacrifices a pawn but gets very solid control over the center. This position is commonly known as the queen's gambit.
Now lets get to the point: what is the halloween gambit?
The haloween gambit, as shown earlier, is sacrificing your knight for a pawn. I recommend using this opening against less experiences players because if your trap fails the evaluation bar gives -1.8 (1.8 for black) so you are losing. If you dont like this terrifying opening it might just be too spooky for you : ).
Once your opponent take back your knight. You PUSH, and PUSH HARDER
Now that the enemy knights have been SPOOKED AWAY (sorry this is halloween i need to make bad jokes)
You can now terrify the opponent's king!
Former world champion Max Euwe recommended d5, bxd5 and c6 or this:
''But hold on, what is i retreat using Nc6?''
When Black retreats using Nc6, White chases the knight again with d5. Then Black has Ne5 (Main line), or Bb4 (Pinski's variation).
After Ne5, white chases again with f4 Then after Ng6 the game usually continues e5 Ng8 d6 cxd6 exd6. In this case White's attack is very dangerous, and likely to prevail in practical play, with the threat of Nb5–c7 difficult to defend totally. Precise defense may theoretically preserve black's material advantage but white has achieved their opening objectives. Overall personally I think the position looks in favor of black
Conclusion:
The haloween gambit is a trap opening but can easily fail and give the advantage to black. I do not recommend using it alot but is still a pretty interesting opening to study. And is also TRULY TERRIFYING(okay ill stop).
