Grasshopper Gets A Friend
Introduction
Welcome back to Grasshopper Antics! Today we will be reviewing King and Grasshopper vs King mates that we started in Part 2, but we will take it to a higher level, by adding another Grasshopper to the board!
Can you checkmate?
No! There are reasons, more complicated than the one Grasshopper version. Here’s a position:
The Grasshoppers are ready to check, and White played Gh7+:
But now what? Black can flee to g7.
If White wanted to control all of Black’s possible escape squares, then he would have to move to f7 or f8, but if he checks if he’s there, then Black can take the checking Grasshopper, and it is a simple drawn King and Grasshopper vs King endgame (for more information, see Part 2).
