There is a real problem with throwing in FFA. There are many players rated in approx 2300-2600 range who regularly throw the game. As long as they avoid 4th and often there is one high rated player in the game they lose very little for 2nd or 3rd. By avoiding 4th's and getting the odd win, maybe 1 in 6 games, they can maintain their rating and continue this cycle. However in Solo they will fall to a much a lower rating which will ultimately dissuade them from throwing the game. For a regular game thrower there would be an overall difference of around 200 to 300 ratings points between FFA and Solo. I think it would be a good idea to bring back the solo rating system and leaderboard. NOT to replace FFA but as an additional rating and leaderboard. The game mode is already there and available to play but playing Solo in a FFA leaderboard is a huge disadvantage. It is more difficult to gain rating in Solo. Solo punishes reckless play and therefore improves the skill level of the game. Also if this is added one day i hope the 8min flagging time control will be removed from it. Another idea could be to alter the FFA scoring system slightly. From 3 -0.5 -0.5 -2 to 3 -0.75 -0.75 -1.5.

PROPOSED RULE CHANGE: KING CAPTURES I've been doing some thinking, and I propose a change to the king capture rules.  This may sound controversial, but I believe king captures should NOT be allowed.  I know it's an exciting part of the game (perhaps because king captures can never happen in regular chess), so the purpose of this post is to spark discussion around the topic.  In my opinion, no rule change should occur unless and until the admin team issues a notice of proposed rule change and solicits comments and feedback for a sufficient period of time.  If you're wondering what inspired this post, here's a link (https://www.chess.com/variants/self-partner/game/69626076/45/2) to a game I recently lost when my opponent captured my king even though his own king was in checkmate. As it currently stands, players are allowed to capture their opponent's king even when their own king is in check.  The current rules break three holy grails of chess: A player must address a check threat on their turn. A checkmated player loses the game. The king cannot be captured. Proposed Rule: Players must address a king capture threat (all other moves are illegal).  If a player cannot make any move that would prevent a king capture, the game ends in stalemate. Similar to how a player must (1) address a check threat and (2) acknowledge a pin threat and not move the intermediate piece, players should do everything they can to prevent a king capture.  All their other moves should be frozen/illegal until they address the king capture threat.  This change would not be unprecedented, as there are other situations where pieces are frozen in chess (e.g. when a king is in check, all other moves are frozen/illegal; blocked pieces cannot move; pinned pieces cannot move; etc.).   In chess, stalemate occurs when a player cannot avoid an impending king capture on the next turn.  Even when pieces are pinned and would otherwise have legal moves but-for the pin, the game ends in a draw.  Similarly, in 4PC, players should not be allowed to let their king be captured.  Thus, when a player cannot prevent an impending king capture threat, the game should end in stalemate. In the event that this Proposed Rule is not implemented, I propose the following Alternative Rule. Alternative Rule: Players cannot capture their opponent's king when their own king is placed in check. The current rules have two moves that are effectively game-finishers: (1) checkmate and (2) king capture.  If players cannot checkmate their opponent when their own king is in check, why should they be allowed to capture their opponent's king under the same circumstances?  I believe the two game-finishers should be treated equally.   Counterargument #1: A forced king capture is a tactical masterpiece that merits a win.  I agree here (it sure is a thing of beauty).  If you want to effectively call a forced king capture checkmate instead of stalemate, I don't think this better comports with the rules of chess, but I’d be fine with this change as well.  I just do not think an unforced king capture is sufficiently akin to a checkmate such that it should also merit a win. Counterargument #2: King captures add a unique, exciting tactical element to 4PC.  I also agree here.  If the object of 4PC is to break free from the reigns of regular chess and come into its own, that’s completely fine!  However, if the object of 4PC is to become a fun chess variant that also stays true to its 1000+ years of tradition, then I believe this proposed rule is a necessary change that best accomplishes this objective. DISCLAIMER: I have never played FFA seriously, so the aforementioned rule change should apply to FFA only to the extent that it would make sense.

Hi, We just completed this game in 4PC Modern: https://www.chess.com/variants/4-player-chess/game/69960811 But somehow the ELO score 1st: 3 wins2nd: 0.05 losses3rd: 0.65 losses4th: 2.3 losses I had the idea that 1st and 2nd always wins and 3rd / 4th always loses, especially as everyone was 2000+

I know that we have a "bug" thread (where I also wrote a couple things), but sorry, our MAIN VARIANT is simply the basic and usual FFA. And it doesn't work properly. Sincerely, HOW COME changes are done to something that has worked for YEARS? And how come anything is changed without due tests and controls before uploading it to the server? It looks so terribly unprofessional. As of today, there are many problems that appeared after ther recent upload. And sincerely I do not care a lot about small hobbies and sub-variants (I sympathise with those who love them though), like FOW, WFT, etc. Let's fix FIRST the main FFA issues: a) there are very annoying points (showing possible moves), and it's impossible to remove them, b) the zombie king is not shown as previously, c) there is no more specific sound when it's YOUR move, it's terribly confusing and I've lost several bullet games because of that already whereas I seldom flag at all, d) the pieces eaten are no more shown (!!!), e) the button "Claim win" appears for all, not only for the player who is entitled to claim... Guys, why on Earth are you changing something that works well?

First bug is that if you select both Atomic and Fatal Capture it has weird interaction. for example in above example if you capture the green pawn there will be a extra dead queen. The second bug is the rule spell chess and Grasshopper piece. In this situation Grasshopper only can move to the marked squares but it shows that the king is under check. And actually the king can move! Please fix thanks
