Controversial question here: does bullet (1+0, etc) help you with your overall chess game in blitz and rapid, as well as help develop your chess skill? Or, do you feel like it builds bad habits and hurts your rapid and more serious chess goals? Personally, I feel like it’s a bit of both. For me, bullet has absolutely helped me with my board vision, as well as seeing so many games and pieces it has definitely helped me understand tactics better and quicker than I feel I would have through traditional chess. I see so much more. For example, with 14 seconds left and my opponent has a light square bishop, I can quickly and instinctively keep my pieces off white squares. This sometimes translates over to rapid games where I can assess it the same way. So, in a way, much of what I’ve learned in bullet has actually helped me in rapid. On the other hand, I’ll be the first to admit your patience and concentration takes a hit because of bullet. Going from 100+ bullet games daily to a handful of rapid is tough, and some of those bad habits come out to hurt you. Positions in bullet are simply not deep enough to be compared to a rapid game. Still, Im personally in the boat that bullet does have a lot of good things for chess players, especially new and intermediate players. Maybe I’m wrong. Especially for newer players, it feels like bullet could be a fun way to get rid of jitters and expectations and just relax and figure it out as you go. What do y’all think? … also the reason I wanted to make this thread was cuz I hit 1700 bullet today

Heyo, 2200+ lc / former 2200+ chess.com rapid here, looking for someone to play quite a few practice games against, maybe in specific openings as well. We might be able to go over books and other things as time permits. A few weird things about me— I don’t talk in voice chats / chess.com classrooms— I have not really been reading books or making repertoires until now— I am playing a lot of fast chess and not enough slow chess (still doing this!) Chess.com user - ninjaswat (obvious )Lichess.org user - Ninjaswat Peak 2275 on chess.com I believe, 2350 on lichess if that’s necessary for you to know. Currently not playing rated rapid on chess.com in general and just started studying the Caro Kahn, though I've currently paused going through my lines... Mainly looking for someone who can (1) sort through all of my random thoughts and musings and (2) prod me to actually study a little chess! Really any rating works but to get something out of this I’d prefer you’re at least 1600 minimum, maybe 1800 is a good recommended starting point. (2) is my #1 concern though 😉 I’m under 18 if an age difference is too much for you, I don’t really care either way. Something I posted on discord, with a few edits. Haven't gotten many bites, so... anyone interested? We can play unrated. The main thing I'm looking for is someone who can help me be consistent with studying openings, endgames, or analyzing instead of playing bullet... rating doesn't matter that much to me. My schedule will be pretty busy so we may not play a ton, but expect a random message or two from me every day! Rating goals (Ordered): 2200 rapid on an alt (chess.com) then 2300 rapid on lichess again then 2300 rapid on the chess.com alt then 2400 rapid on lichess then I return to rapid on this account and go for 2300 then blitz to 2300 on both chess.com accounts, in either order Chess Goals (Miscellaneous): 4000 puzzles on chess.com 2500, 2600, 2700, and maybe up to 3000 puzzles on lichess 2100 (again) and 2200 puzzle battle 2200 Chess960/Fischer Random 50+ rated classical games on lichess --> 2400 classical Analyzing every single rapid, classical game I've played 2 opening repertoires per side 1 gambit repertoire per side Finishing an endgame book or 3 endgame courses fully Finishing a middlegame book or 2 middlegame courses fully But above all, have fun! That's a lot of things that might only come to pass years from now, but if you think you're interested in helping, well... post here or message me Now to post this before chess.com quits on me.
This club used to have a tradition of sending annotated games and getting feedback on them. So far @Viznik has been one of the only ones posting games here, so I thought I would annotate the game that I just played, and lost. Please read my annotations and give feedback if you have the time If someone can tell me where my thinking is wrong, that would be amazing!

me the whole game: (Gif of a scared person but I can’t upload it for some reason)
Hello B&M Family!!! It’s been over a YEAR since I last played a rapid game. Maybe even longer! To be honest, it’s been over a year since I’ve played chess at all! Rated just below 1400, I had little hope of winning my first game back. But the chess Gods smiled on me with this one. Just WOW! The amount of sacrifices in this game is astonishing. I was just trying to gain the advantage, and it seemed the clearest way was to move my pieces to his King side. When the opportunities arose to sac, well , if you know me … you know I love to sacrifice pieces for even the smallest advantage. If you love tactics, this is a game for you. And it’s my first game of chess in over a year! I’m pretty happy with this one, so decided to take some time to analyze it and talk about my ideas and share here on Beginners and Masters! what I love about this game is the tactics used at a lower level (1400~). I’m not the greatest player here by any means, but I’ve played against a lot of 1800+ and 2000+ players and even won a few times (if you know you know) because (in my best attempt to sound humble here) I understand mid game tactics a little better than the average 1300/1400/1500. However, my *theory* is weak, as I only know a few openings truly well enough to play them at a high level, therefore I hit somewhat of a “wall” advancing against higher ranked players in the 1700+ range. Yet, being able to grow my theory may prove to be the exact antidote I need to get my game past the 1600+ level finally once and for all. Of course, the engine hates me and gave me a 52% accuracy. Let’s talk about why that is. Oh, and this victory is especially sweet not only cuz it’s my first game back in a year, but because my opponent immediately started talking trash as soon as I sacrificed a piece. He kept saying “you lose” and sending emojis. Little did he know.. his toxicity was but a mirage Also it’s good to be back on Chess.com and especially Beginners and Masters! I missed y’all!
Been having fun trying to implement a more defensive based style of chess. I love(d) to play aggressively, tactics, sacrificed, etc etc… which is all good. But recently I’ve been trying my hand at playing more defensively (but not necessarily more “passively”, there’s a difference!) This game was a fun one because my opponent (white) had the beat on me (in my opinion and according to the engine). But what’s interesting is to watch him get frustrated seeing I’m not making any moves to attack, and he makes a single blunder, which falls to another and another… I know this frustration all too well. You start tilting, trying to find a way in. I think at my level (1200-1400) playing defensively and waiting for your opponent to make a mistake could be a great way to improve your game. Heck, even at lower levels — in fact, maybe even *more* at lower levels — playing defensively could prove very fruitful. check out the game for yourself: also… whoever at chess.com decided to add this to the game analysis is just mean. My ego will never recover from such a statement:
So if 4 or more people are interested, I would like to organise a hyper bullet tournament for Saturday, 23rd december. You would play 11 hyper bullet (30 second games) against your opponent to see who prigresses. Say it here if you are interested in joining
What are your thoughts on an extremely defensive chess style? One where you make almost no aggressive moves, rather simply tighten your defense as much as possible, simply waiting for your opponent to make an “over-aggressive” mistake? In the game below, I implement a “castle doctrine” defense; a relatively non aggressive opening and keeping most of my “attacking” pieces at bay. Take a look: One of the key things to note is how I use the pawns very slowly and methodically to gently push against his attacking pieces. Pawns can be used aggressively (think two steps at a time or pushing down the board) but they can also be used to close positions and gentle nudge away pieces. Let’s have a discussion: is playing chess extremely defensive a good strategy for mid level players?
B and M was the best community I ever got involved in on chess.com, it was so fun for 12 year old me to come home from school and just chill out and chat in the lounge, debate in forums, say random stuff in notes lol. Ill never forget how Viznik supported me in many debates regatding Ireland and its many wars vs England Lets try to bring back the old days and just have some fun here in B and M. Please. The OGs remember how cool this place was.

If any beginners want to do practice games I am 1150 rated rapid and around 1000 in blitz and bullet. I also have a very high puzzle rating of 2,530 (top 1% of chess.com). Rated or unrated, no more than 15|10. I will also use game review on your games and I can coach you through your mistakes during the game (must be rapid for me to have enough time). I would recommend you are at least 150+ below my rating. Reply on this forum or send a message directly, please don’t challenge me spontaneously I probably won’t accept. Thanks, Mason

So, I think this is a very interesting opening idea. You have 2 dangerous bishops, and can get very easy development

ONE TIME CONTROL ONLY (blitz, bullet, rapid, daily) Must be CHESS (i.e. not some random 960 game) What I will do: - Look at recent games in that time control, around 10-30 games depending on how much time I feel like spending (this is decided arbitrarily) - Write somewhere around five paragraphs criticizing all the moves and their grandsons on what was done wrong - includes diagrams, games - topics covered are (in order of most coverage to least coverage, estimated guess) will be opening play, thinking, strategy, tactics Here's an example (from discord): ignore background lol this is in messages

Happy April Fools Day! April 1, 2025: “The ability to play chess is the sign of a gentlemen. The ability to play chess well is a sign of a wasted life.” -Paul Morphy, GM. (Do you think he stole this quote from his dad who shamed him into quitting chess?)
