I have not played the Benko Gambit for many years...I used to play it all the time until my ubiquitous opponent got wise and started declining it. Later, I was playing Modern Benoni until I realized what an utter pain the Taimanov variation is. Recently I got serious about my play and started recording all the games I saw for analysis. My friend Rebecca started this game that looked like any other Indian defense but she ended up transposing to the Queen's Gambit (my least favorite opening). The analysis suggested the Benko Gambit! I thought, wait, once you play an early c5, you run the risk of the Taimanov variation, right?
Wrong!
Every move that might lead to that line was dusted. There was an answer that looks great for each move that never transposes. In fact, no Modern or Classical Benoni lines were even considered. The new lines are mutants.
So I'm starting a project to build an opening book based on these suggestions. By far the most challenging of these will be the Benko Gambit Declined lines. White has two opportunities to refuse the "full gambit" and I'm hoping that if you have some good BGD games for black that you will share them with me. Likewise, I will share the new mutant Benoni lines as they arise.
For example, perhaps you've heard of the Snake Benoni.
If white doesn't want to play into your Benko Gambit, one of the lines they might take is:
1. d4 Nf6 2. c4 c5 3. e3
to which the reply is suggested:
3...e6 4. d5 exd5 5. cxd5 Bd6!?
which looks very much like the Snake Benoni, but isn't.
Behold...the Slytherin Defense. Out of book by move 5. Likely equalizing within the next few moves. Zero risk of the Benoni Taimanov variation.
Not a bad way to revive the Benko Gambit, eh?
