Hi everybody! I believe this is an international group, so naturally we have members from a lot of different countries who speak a lot of different languages. I thought it might be a good idea to start this thread, where native speakers can post words and phrases from their language, that are relevant to a vegan/vegetarian lifestyle. Such as, how to order vegetarian food at a restaurant, etc. If anybody wants/needs any german language help (even if not related to chess or vegetarianism) I will be glad to be of assistance if my time permits. You may feel free to send me a private message. Native speakers are always preferable to google translate. Please post relevant questions, words and phrases etc here. Thanks for participating!

2 years ago in the same day, I played a 5 minutes game with Hikaru Nakamura and I was able to checkmate him. Let me review the game. I played my usual queen's pawn opening, the Torre attack to build up a nice advantage in the center and later I played a4 to challenge his b5 pawn. He captured the a4 pawn and then his a-pawn became isolated which I won soon. I got a winning endgame, but my time was low, He played very quickly and generated counterplay. He could win back the pawn and equalize, but missed his chances. I won a knight fir my extra pawn, but my clock went down to 20 seconds. My position was winning, but time-wise I was losing. When I had only 3 seconds on my clock he made a bad move, he attacked my rook, but then I gave him a checkmate in 2 moves. The best victory of my life. It help me to believe, I can get the Grandmaster title. The best thing happened in the best time. A good sign! You can watch the final minute from Hikaru's stream at https://clips.twitch.tv/AnimatedLaconicReindeerUWot and from my stream at https://clips.twitch.tv/OptimisticSpineyRabbitStoneLightning Would you like to improve your chess? I just want to share this experience ! I had been a vegetarian from birth & a vegan since 1996 ! Since i was aware that my diet is lacking in vitamin B12 ,about 10 yrs ago ,i just asked a physician whether i need to take it as an oral supplement & he dismissed it saying i am talking about all bookish things ! Last year,i was suffering from severe anemia (Hb- 6 mg)& when i went to another physician who ,after knowing that i am vegan ,asked me to perform a peripheral smear test & found that almost all of my R.B.C. s were replaced by those in a premature stage (megaloblastic anemia) !(Viatamin B12 acts as an enzyme to help DNA to form new RBCs& if there is a deficiency of B12 ,all the RBCs that are formed remain in a premature stage ,thus hampering their oxygen carrying capacity !) He immediately prescribed me a schedule of 10 intramuscular injections which brought my blood status back to normal ! Now ,i am taking a daily dose of B12 orally after my meals ! Thanks to my physician Dr. Kadu ,whose timely advice prevented more serious consequences of B12 deficiency in the form of nervous symptoms which are irreversible !

Because an old "vegan" song came into my mind, I'd like to get to know more of them! Here is the place to post songs linked with veganism ;) The song I was thinking about is by the Swedish hardcore band Refused (feat. somebody), I suppose there must be lots of vegan hardcore songs, since this scene is known for its veganism (i.e. straight edge) Btw, here it is http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Kr6IbElMCik jag äter inte mina vänner = I don't eat my friends. The lyrics are truely beautiful, all the time he sings "dogs, dogs are humans. rats, rats are humans. cows, cows are humans" and so on... So, I'm really looking forward to getting to know more tunes like this

This is an exerpt from GM Arunabi's question and answer article submitted this morning. He is responding to a question asking how to improve one's thinking process during a game. www.chess.com/article/view/systemize-your-thinking-process If you would have read Think like a Grand Master by Kotov, he has given several ideas about the thinking process during the game. It is important to discipline your calculation. Kotov says to calculate 3 candidate moves in any given position. Make sure you calculate all three lines before making a move-- this is really important and even several IM’s and GM’s very often do this mistake. It is simply because of the old advice "if you find a good move always look for a better one." How to find those 3 candidate moves initially? Usually you get the feel of the position and know what to do in the given position, in other words intuition. Make sure before starting any calculation you select the candidate moves and then start going deeper into the variations. It is also important to complete a variation before starting to calculate another variation. These kind of disciplined calculations will help you a lot in the long run. When Knight is there, fork is there. When Bishop is there, pin is there. When Rook is there, skewer is there. When Queen is there, double attack is there. My coach in my early days always used to tell this to me. After so many years of experience I now understand that, when you calculate in this manner you will be able to find many tactical blows hidden in the position. Whatever knowledge you have make sure you understand it well. For example: 1) I will never create a pawn weakness. 2) I will never expose my king. 3) I will never leave my knight in the corner These are some basic ideas you must follow when you play the game. Initially, know the rules, and as you get experienced you will know the exceptions as well. Chess game can be divided into three stage Opening Middle game Endgame Opening: Whatever opening you play, make sure you learn its basic ideas and plans. There is no use in memorizing moves without understanding them. Know the idea behind each and every move, when you prepare and train yourself this way, you will know what to do even when you face a new move. Middlegame: There should be a game plan. When you study the opening make sure you learn the plan that has to be executed in the middlegame. You need to be tactically alert and make positionally sound decisions in executing your game plan. Endgame: Forecast the type of ending you need to play from your middle game itself. If your pawn structure is worse, then it is not wise to play an ending, where you will either lose or make a draw after much suffering. Learn the basic endgame positions and you can easily relate them to the position you get over the board. I think your problem is you lack experience and I am sure when you get experienced you will start using the ideas you prepare. I would recommend you to play as many games as possible. This can be both tournament and friendly games. In the meantime make sure you keep improving your middle game and endgame skills.

Hi all, Just thought I'd give you all a "heads-up" on a new book I'm about 70% of the way through: it's called, "Mind if I Order the Cheeseburger" by Sherry Colb. Each chapter is based around a typical question that vegans hear from non-vegans regularly. Colb breaks each question down to its moral bedrock, and begins constructing her argument from there, and always with the goal of helping the two see eye-to-eye across the ideology gap, even if the conclusion is uncomfortable for the NV. It's also a great source of information for those thinking of changing their lifestyle to one that is as cruelty free as possible. In tone and style, I'd say it was a companion piece to J S Foer's Eating Animals, in that it's very easy to read. And for that reason, it will be the book I recommend to people thinking of making the leap (as well as a number of cook books of course!). Highly recommended! (Upcoming on my vegan reading list: Food Choice and Sustainibility and The Modern Savage (non-fiction) and The Awareness (Fiction) - though if anyone has read these, let me know your view.)

Hi, I'm currently working my way through the above book, and I just thought I'd give it a mention in this forum. For those who have read Eating Animals, this would be a natural, more up-to-date, book with which to follow on. The book covers everything from animal usage in food (which goes beyond just factory farming), to animals used in art and religious practices. The big selling point for me, aside from the new material, is the book's tone: it's not gratuitous, though that doesn't mean it's an easy read, and facts are presented logically and clearly. Also, at the end of each chapter there are suggestions for those who want to do something about the issues raised in that particular section. I'm currently about halfway through, and I think that this will be one of the best books on the moral argument against the use of animals, so I thought I'd just give those who could be interested a heads up. Enjoy! PS - Has anyone read it all yet? If so, opinions?
The US navy by it's own estimations will deafen 15,900 whales and dolphins and kill 1,800 more in the waters off Hawaii, California, and the Atlantic coast, due to testing of high frequency underwater sound. Whales and dolphins depend on sound to navigate and live. Your signature and comment could help stop this Navel program. I used this link to sign the petition: http://signon.org/sign/navy-under-water-sound?source=s.em.cp.&r_by=499657 Thanks!

Hey All, Bauttar is a good friend of mine. We sort of founded the group together, my contribution was only being the person with the paid account; he did all the heavy lifting, bringing us all together. He asked me to pass on this message. I have posted in some other groups about vegetarianism, and made the mistake of posting a lot of different stuff on my blog wich has been published on like general blog. I was thinking a blog, as the name says, stays on my page and is not seen by anybody not going on my profile. It was some music, chess stuff, maths stuff and climate change and livestock videos. So this stuff has appeared to all, including some hardcore stuff on what's happening in animal farming. My account has been closed quickly after, so i beleive this is the reason. Thought i regret that i posted it without knowing that a lot of people will view it, and that my account has been closed without questions nor explanations, i would perhaps done the same thing as an admin, and the truth is that if i would know, i would have posted some hardcore videos with pleasure knowing that my account will be closed, happy that at least one or two people more would know what really is this meat ending in their stomachs. Have fun and win a max of games, improve the average rating of the group, so that the vegan average would be higher than any other one ( except perhaps the groups reserved to those who have more than 2000, but who knows ^^ ) If anyone wants to fill his shoes as an active admin of this group, let me know and I'll appoint you in the settings. I'm a busy person and really just want to play chess, but agree that vegans having a presence on the site is important. There's a lot of stuff happening in the world right now and the more people can see that the plant-based diet is a viable and enjoyable one, the better. You guys are great. James
Dear Vegan Brotherhood Friends, This morning my dear friend Mitto, from the Arabian Heart and Peace Loving World Citizens, alerted chess.com members through a forum post about U.S. proposed legislation to limit content on the web, and Wikapedia's response to this with a 24 hour blackout. Since all of us on chess.com use the web, I wanted to let all of you in on the discussion and the action. All of us will take Action. Some of us will take the Action of ignoring, and some will take the Action of Protest, but the beautiful thing is, we get a choice. The following statement is from Sue Gardner, executive director of Wikimedia, taken from the Wikipedia website. This more eloquently states what I would like to say myself. ..."Like Kat and the rest of the Wikimedia Foundation Board, I have increasingly begun to think of Wikipedia’s public voice, and the goodwill people have for Wikipedia, as a resource that wants to be used for the benefit of the public. Readers trust Wikipedia because they know that despite its faults, Wikipedia’s heart is in the right place. It’s not aiming to monetize their eyeballs or make them believe some particular thing, or sell them a product. Wikipedia has no hidden agenda: it just wants to be helpful. That’s less true of other sites. Most are commercialy motivated: their purpose is to make money. That doesn’t mean they don’t have a desire to make the world a better place –many do!– but it does mean that their positions and actions need to be understood in the context of conflicting interests. My hope is that when Wikipedia shuts down on January 18, people will understand that we’re doing it for our readers. We support everyone’s right to freedom of thought and freedom of expression. We think everyone should have access to educational material on a wide range of subjects, even if they can’t pay for it. We believe in a free and open Internet where information can be shared without impediment. We believe that new proposed laws like SOPA –and PIPA, and other similar laws under discussion inside and outside the United States– don’t advance the interests of the general public. You can read a very good list of reasons to oppose SOPA and PIPA here, from the Electronic Frontier Foundation. Why is this a global action, rather than US-only? And why now, if some American legislators appear to be in tactical retreat on SOPA? The reality is that we don’t think SOPA is going away, and PIPA is still quite active. Moreover, SOPA and PIPA are just indicators of a much broader problem. All around the world, we’re seeing the development of legislation intended to fight online piracy, and regulate the Internet in other ways, that hurt online freedoms. Our concern extends beyond SOPA and PIPA: they are just part of the problem. We want the Internet to remain free and open, everywhere, for everyone. On January 18, we hope you’ll agree with us, and will do what you can to make your own voice heard. Sue Gardner,Executive Director Take action: If you’re a US citizen, contact your representative to let them know you oppose SOPA and PIPA.
Hi everybody! Just read recently on article on freakonomics. For those who never heard of it, freaknomics is a book, a movie, and a blog, about economy and sociology.
