BOOK STUDY #1
Hello Chess addicts...
I participated in an Open Tournament couple of weeks ago. There I had the opportunity to look for some good chess books which are exhibited for sale in front of the Tournament Hall. I had read some reviews on some good chess books which is written both in English and in my native language. Luckily enough there I had the opporunity to find those reviewed chess books including all areas of the game, After some minor thinking process I decided to grab "How to Reassess Your Chess" by IM @Silman without any hesitation
What I am planning to do for my Book Study Section is to explain the lessons learned from the content and share it with you. Let's get started then...
This book is giving us a new (at least for me) approach to understand any chess position based on Imbalances. So what is the meaning of this term? Yeap, it was the first question coming to my mind and I passionately tried to find the meaning. Firstly to be honest I looked up in an English&Turkish Dictionary for the meaning Then I started to read the content. The Author explains that an imbalance is any significant difference in the two respective position.
Here are the Imbalance List explained in the book:
- Superior minor piece
- Pawn Structure
- Space
- Material
- Control of a key file
- Control of a hole/weak square
- Lead in development
- Initiative (Pushing Your Own Agenda-I very much liked this definition
)
- King Safety
- Statics vs. Dynamics
MAIN IDEA In order to be succesful chess player, we have to base our moves and plans on the spesific imbalance-oriented criteria that exist in the given position, not on our mood, tastes and/or fears!
As a player who hardly finds a plan on the chess board, I started to think in that way and I feel it improved my positional evaluation skills. And this term helped me find a plan over the board. I know that I am at the beginning stage for this issue but in the future I believe that I will have a great consciousness of imbalances and find good plans even when my eyes closed
Following through the imbalance list I will study Minor Pieces (Part Two in the book) (Knights and Bishops subchapters) and hope to publish what I have learned from those.
Hope to enjoy...
