Rook on the 7th Rank II Master's Games Analysis #1
Welcome everyone,
In this post, I want to share a classic played by legends Anatoly Karpov and Wolfgang Uhlmann.
Genius of strategic play, Anatoly Karpov, follows his masters Capablanca and Nimzowitsch and accurately uses their principles in his own games. In the mentioned game played in Madrid in 1973, Grandmasters knew where to put the pieces perfectly and thus they showed their chess understandings to the world. While GM Uhlmann, as playing with IQP (Isolated Queen's Pawn) wanted to create dynamic chances, GM Karpov, used his positional evaluation skiils and succeded to empower his own pieces and restrict his opponent's. Let's have a look at this classic...
- When playing against IQP (Isolated Queen's Pawn) we should control the square in front of the IQP and then try to simplify the position trading minor pieces. Because when the opponent allows such minor piece trades, there remains heavy pieces on the board and the IQP becomes serious weakness. So the side with IQP should seek for counterplay, and keep the pieces on board. When it is possible, pushing the IQP can be beneficial to IQP-side. But in this spesific example g4 move was extraordinary !
- We should always try to use weakened squares to enhance our pieces scopes and limit our opponent's. In this game White successfully used b5 square to use the e-file. Black couldn't execute the Rook trades on e8 square.
- To get a Rook to the Seventh Rank can be one of our strategical goals during the games. But it should be combined with some threats and we should have another resources to effectively use this strategical achievement. In this game White combined f4 plan to achieve this.
Hope you enjoyed from this game. Feel free to comment below, they would help develop my future contents...
