Variant Name: "Shadow Clone Chess"
Overview:
Every time you move a piece, it leaves behind a “shadow clone”—a temporary ghost that mimics the moved piece but can’t move or capture. Shadows can block, confuse, and even be sacrificed.
Setup:
Standard chess board and pieces.
Shadow clones appear every time a piece moves, staying in the square it left.
Shadows disappear after 3 turns (or sooner, if captured).
Shadow Clone Rules:
Shadow clones look identical to the piece that created them, but:
They cannot move or capture.
They can block movement and attacks (just like a normal piece).
They can be captured, removing them instantly.
Kings do not leave shadows (to prevent excessive confusion).
Only one shadow per square—no stacking.
Special Rule: Clone Sacrifice
If you have 3 or more shadows on the board, you may sacrifice all of them to:
Instantly revive a captured minor piece (knight or bishop) onto your back rank.
OR, teleport one piece anywhere on the board (optional variant mode).
Strategic Effects:
Creates incredible tactical fog—you must remember which are real.
Clones can block checks, clog pawn files, or be used as distractions.
You can build walls of ghosts for defense or temporary fortresses.
Variant Modes:
Fast Fade: Shadows last only 1 turn.
Solid Shadows: Clones can capture but still can’t move—like stationary turrets.
Colorblind Mode: Shadows don’t indicate their side… until they’re interacted with. (Extreme confusion!)
Visuals (Chess.com Style):
Shadow pieces are transparent or have a smoky aura.
Hovering shows their origin and turn remaining.
Optional toggles for show/hide shadows (like arrows or threats).
