Hello, Variants Admins and players! My idea was to have a “secret menu” for variants. Let me explain. At a restaurant, sometimes they’ll give you a menu, but you can also order other things that aren’t on the written menu but which the kitchen will still make if you know to ask for it. What I was thinking is that you could do the same for variants. You would have all of the “standard variants” which people can easily select. But in addition to that, you’d have a list of other variants that have names, such that you can’t select it from the menu but if you go into the analysis board and type the name, you can still play it. And if you have one of these secret menu games, it would actually have a title in the Lobby rather than just saying “Custom Sideways” or something like that. This secret menu would contain previous WoF entries, plus any other variants that players have expressed interest in (maybe 10 or 20 players) even though the CGAs declined it. What are your thoughts? Is this a good idea? Is it a doable idea? Thanks for your time.

Several variants on here have introduced non-standard chess pieces and there is no clear guide as to how they move. When I picked such a variant, if I dare to stop and read the rules I'll be told I didn't play a move on time. So I have to randomly play and hope? And then it never told me in the rules how each piece moved. I won by luck as it happens.

This is a chess variant tournament that I have created, using a variant I have also created. It is a knockout tournament with three rounds, and we need seven players excluding me. The variant's name is Burial Chess. The tournament will be hosted via 3-day daily chess. Here are the rules: 1. Standard rules of chess apply, except for the en passant glitch. You will be banned if you exploit the en passant glitch. 2. Win a game by checkmating the king or capturing all your opponent's pieces. (or timeout/resignation, I guess) 3. Your first tournament game will just be normal chess. However, for the second game, we will only take the pieces left alive from the first game, i.e. those not captured. 4. For the second and third tournament games, you will need to choose where your remaining pieces are placed on the first and second ranks. Of course, pawns can only be on the second rank, but you can put a queen on b2. Both players need to seal the piece locations before the game. Please sign up below! We are looking to receive sixteen participants in all! (5/16)

I found a Variant that generalizes chess to any number of armies, with each player getting half of a regular chess board, meaning an 8 by 4 board. To make a move a player puts two of the half boards together. One interesting feature of this variant, is that with more than 2 players bishops, and other normally color bound pieces, stop being color bound as a bishop, or other normally color bound piece, can go from half board A to half board B, half board B to half board C, and then from half board C to half board A to end up on a different color than it started on. I suspect this would make normally color bound pieces become much more powerful in this variant.

Themes: Endgames, Zugzwang, Switchback, Domination Please note that there exists only one solution, everything else allows black/yellow to draw / win. White/red to play and win.
An idea I was having is for there to be pieces that can only capture or be captured by enemy pieces of certain colors. So for instance red might have some pieces that can capture or be captured by red pieces, but not by yellow or blue pieces, and some that can only capture blue and yellow pieces, but not green pieces. If for instance in this position the green rook was only allowed to capture or be captured by yellow pieces then it would not be allowed to capture the blue bishop, and the red amazon could not capture it, but if the yellow knight was something that was allowed to capture a piece of any color, then the yellow knight could capture the green rook. In this example, if the red queen was only allowed to capture or be captured by blue or yellow pieces, but not green pieces, but the red rook could capture green pieces, and the green king was allowed to capture red pieces, then red would not be in check, as the red queen would not be allowed to capture the green king, and the red king also could not capture the red queen, but the red king would be allowed to capture the red rook. If in this position the green rook was allowed to capture or be captured by pieces of any color, but the yellow king was only allowed to capture or be captured by blue pieces, then yellow would not be in check as the yellow king could not be taken by the green rook, even if it was greens turn to move, and the yellow king could also not capture the green rook.

So, I just wondered if Reinforcement Chess would be able to come out. The rules are here: Reinforcement chess is basically, when you capture a piece, it becomes yours but you don't have a choice of where you put that piece , because it gets placed to it's original square on your side immediately. If that square is occupied, you can't capture the piece. If you are in check, you can capture another piece as long as it will block the check.

I understand that having bishops worth 5 points comes from their power in standard 4pc on a 14 by 14 cross board, but some custom positions are on smaller boards, and on small boards the power of a bishop is about the same as a 3 point piece. So I think that for custom games there should be the option to either have 3 point bishops, similar to how there are 1 point queens, or have the option to set bishops to 3 points in the game rules. This way on a smaller board it would be possible to have the number of points for bishops more closely match their power.

One special rule I read about for the ancient form of chess known as Tamerlane Chess, which predated modern standard International Chess by a few hundred years, was the ability of the King to switch places with a non royal piece while in check. I think it could be interesting to have this as an option for a special rule in custom variants. It would mean that in this position for instance, assuming white didn't play the switch previously, white would not be in checkmate as all of the non royal pieces would be on safe squares so white could play a move that results in a position like this

I heard that at one time it the written rules of chess did not explicitly state that a pawn had to promote to a piece of the same color, and so someone came up with this puzzle In which an offbeat interpretation of the rules at the time would have implied that white had a mate in 1 by promotion to a black knight. I was thinking based on this a variant that could be added would be one, in which, it would be possible to promote a pawn to a piece of any color.
