there is no such thing as a 'lag cheat'.

lag is not related to what one does, it is related to internet connections and the time it takes packets to relay via the internet.

not controllable by humans.

doh.

well then you better ask imdeviate about the software he know about.

Clock cheating hasn't been ultimately eradicated--at least that would be my bet.

Sorry - I've been out. Chessocity didn't prove it exactly, but his ideas were close enough to merit some recognition. We have determined that it is VERY rare, but is occurring in some games by a few soon-to-be-banned folks. I have personally never encountered it, though I'm sorry for anyone who has (though again -EXTREMELY rare). I have no idea why someone would say live chess stinks - its super fast, totally stable, an loads of fun. I'm not sure how .01% of people time hacking constitutes "stinks", but to each their own. We should have appropriate countermeasures done within 7-10 days (they aren't easy). Answered enough for ya? :)

well, I never play 1 min games any more - too fast to deal with effectively - and longer time controls - just means you have to wait a lot for the timer - when your opponent disconnects and doesn't return....    so I stick to 3 to 5 min and occasionally 10 min games.

hadn't thought it worthwhile for someone to hack the system to try to add time to their clock (when it is their turn).

oh well, I stand (sit - actually), corrected once again.

So bad, so sad, tragic.

Play one minute games- they can't use it fast enough to cheat there!

Whether you lost to a human or a cheater with an engine, focus on WHY you lost, learn from your mistake and you'll become a better player for it...which is more than someone letting a machine play for them can say.

I absolutely concur with this sentiment. A large part of my interest in playing chess lies in my desire to keep learning more. As sad as it is that we even have to think about others cheating, my ability to learn isn't affected by it.
