Does anybody think this would be fun?

I know this feature will never be added, but I think it would be fun to be able to challenge other players  (probably higher or lower rated) to play against them with only certain material on the board. Lets say for example, to see if I could checkmate them with a queen, and king against their king, and rook.  Or perhaps king, and two knights against king, to see if they blunder, and get checkmated. Just playing puzzles against each other to test your skill. Of course ratings would be absolutely  UN AFFECTED.

It would beginners, and low rated players more than most, I believe.

IMO this would be really useful for training purposes -- just like the computer match options they have now with specific positions.

That does sound like it would be pretty useful. People could even do crazy positions like king and eight knights vs king and eight bishops just for entertainment.

That brings back fond memories of my first chess computer, way back in the good ol' days when it was actually possible to BEAT them. (It was a Boris chess computer in a lovely wooden case, remember those?). Rather then playing normal chess, I'd set up crazy positions like you just described and watch the computer play them out.

Maybe that computer's worth a lot of money now.

This feature request has been on the wishlists for a while. It would be a useful addition to the handicapping-systems---levelling-the-playing-field schemes.

The ECO codes are well enough for most circumstances, but should you be able to create a challenge, tournament etc. by pasteing the FEN code for a specific board-arrangement as a starting position, we wouldn't have to add extra arrangements (like the bongcloud opening) to the list.

I didn't even know that. I thought I was the only one who thought of stuff like this.

Great minds think alike ...

Perhaps the wishlists were before your time ...

There's too much to read in all that stuff!

Don't comment back here until you've read (and assimilated) all of it! Laughing

art, it's nice of you to dig up those threads where this suggestion already occurred. But how useful is it to link to a 1000 post thread without giving the post number(s) where this topic is discussed?

Hmm----did the new forum Site Feedback and Suggestions incorporate previous themes or amalgamate them in to a current Wishlist status ? Wonder what is still wish listed.

I don't reckon there's any formal carryover from one wishlist to its successor. It's simply a question of making a wish - and hoping the Fairy Godmother considers the feature beneficial.

I was raising the wishlists above woodshover's radar, since he said: "I thought I was the only one who thought of stuff like this". In the case of this arbitrary starting position feature, the previous posts probably don't add much to the discussion.

(Plus, we still don't have the facility of linking directly to individual posts.)

Au contraire: this was on wishlists -106, -105 ... -31 (apart from - quite inexplicably - minus 42.)

=) YES it would be fun! But next time please put this in the right Forum Category, so you don't irritate "us". The category "Site Feedback & Suggestions" would be more than ideal!

Art's #.... Have been told in the past I was "Away wi' the Fairies"- can't  use that expression nowadays ! Have to use "Lost the plot. "

Yes, I can see how that kept you from writing the post # in your table. :-)
