No matter how I set the Spell Duration and Spell Lock settings, the duration always lasts 2 moves, and the spell is always locked for 5 turns. Can anybody else confirm this, maybe it's just me? This may be why we havn't seen so many variants created with spell chess rules. Also, the grasshopper isn't reacting to the jump spell as expected.

I don't know if anybody's attempted this before but I tried modernizing the game Chaturanga and this is what I came up with. Pawns: Pawns are the exact same in Chaturanga and can promote to any of the pieces except itself and the King. They're worth 1 point but I'm not sure whether to make them able to double advance and en passant so they're orthodox Chess pawns, so give me feedback please Elephants: Elephants move like normal but with the combined moves of a Ferz, so now they reach all their assigned color squares. They can still jump. I'm not sure what their point value should be but as a place holder I'm assigning them 2, give feedback on what their point value should be please. Guard/Mann: This piece takes the place of the Ferz and is worth 3 points. It moves and captures exactly like the King. Knights: Same in Chaturanga and Chess. Worth 3 points. Rooks: Same in Chess. Castling and all it's rules apply. Worth 5 points King: Same in Chess. Castling and all it's rules apply. Winning: Same win conditions from Chaturanga apply. Starting Position: Same starting position in Chaturanga. The Guard/Mann takes the place of the Ferz.

Despite the attractive topic name made to draw your attention and bring you here, this post is made for future referencing from submission responses, intended to explain a quite common issue the CGA Team is currently facing within custom variant submissions. TL;DR New Custom Variants are meant to bring new innovative ideas and mechanics of the chess game, not just a custom board with custom rules. The only exception for that is NCV targeting to be an improved version of a specific existing variant(s) or its concept. When submitting, making it clear in the description what innovative ideas the variant brings, or which existing variants it's targeting to replace or be a successor of (and if so, why exactly it is better than the original) will significantly increase the chances of your variants to be accepted. First, I want to make it clear that we have a big number of variants on the official list, and that number is about to be cut 30%-50% one day again, due to low popularity of some variants. As CGA Team, we are looking for interesting and unique variants. A pitfall is that Variants has grown to a point where it got so many rules and features that the majority of variants can be interesting by themselves, by containing features and rules that are new or unique to regular chess. However, they are not new and neither unique for the chess variants history we have. Thus, when deciding whether to put a new variant submitted to the list or not, we can no longer solely rely on the fact that the variant has interesting rules which makes it interesting to play; instead, we now look at how well you implement different rules, mechanics of the game and create new combinations and types of games we have not yet seen, tested, and played. Therefore, we are not looking for similar, one-type variants. Please see the real image below, these all are submissions made by the same author. This case was taken as a good example, and is not meant to be related to the particular author of these submissions. Please notice how different the last 4 positions are from the rest, being all under review at the same time. There are 3 variants that we accepted after many revisions and many hours/days of thorough testing and debates, and now we don't look for any other similar variants to cover the same concept or share the same ideas, unless they are meant to be a better replacement of the existing variants or bring innovative ideas that make it worth keeping both versions on the list. We will no longer consider submissions for review of variants that are too blatantly similar to or share the same concept of previously declined or accepted variants, unless a fair justification to do so is included in the description of your submission. If you are making one, please also mention what existing variant (or its concept) your variant strives to improve, providing all the points how and why it is better than the original, etc. Obviously, "rook is now closer to a king" is not a point by any means, unless there is a continuation with further explanation of why it matters. That said, it's important to keep making custom variants based on existing concepts, improving the existing variants or making its successors, bringing more balance, gameplay variety, or fun elements to the games. We wouldn't have so many great, fun and popular variants without your input! We are still looking for your submissions; we are only raising the quality requirements a little bit for the one-type variants.

hereby i propose a chess variant its whole new game its a complex game although i plan to remove wazir and ferz and replace ferz with Camel Piece : Rook , Knight , Bishop , Queen , King , General , Wazir , Ferz , Archbishop , Chancellor , pawn Board size 10x10 , promotion occurs once the pawn was on the enemy's pawn home rank example : white pawn reach 8th rank and promote and black pawn reach 3rd rank and promote Revised version : and this is the updated version , this is another version of grand chess as while i played against a computer ferz and wazir was proved useless as it just taking space and limiting mobility the rule are just same as before . i dont think they're completely useless (ferz and wazir) , i think this just improve version don't approve both version just one of it

Title. This bug came up in several of the lobotomy variants and WOF- the grasshopper field. On the picture the pieces are colored but when you click "try this variant" those pieces are gray (dead).

Hello I have been making a few custom variants recently and I have a question. Are there things that I can do to make it easier for example I would like to add a full rank of pawns is there a way to do that other than dragging each pawn over on its own or I would like to get rid of ever brick when I increase my board size is this possible or anything like this.

In light of a recent issue I've seen come up, I wanted to make an announcement to clear things up. Please read to the end if you are a variant creator! Ever since @BFDIChess adapted a historical variant called Clobber onto Variants (see: https://variants.world/posts/10219 and https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Clobber), there have been quite a few posts with the same theme of "Make strategic captures on a rectangular board with Giveaway" or "Fight for space on the board by making strategic captures while keeping in mind that there's Fatal Capture", etc., etc. Alongside Clobber, we also received another submission called WoF | Letisus (see: https://variants.world/posts/10218)which we declined since the concept was so similar that it wouldn't make sense having both accepted. Fast forward to 2 months ago, @wolyn created a variant called WoF | Cloister (see: https://variants.world/posts/38), which was also created around the same time as WoF | Stone Knights by @larrysupercpu (see: https://variants.world/posts/44). Although there are similarities to Clobber, these variants are unique by using gamerules such as Any Capture, Fatal Capture, Crazyhouse, and Stalemate Win/Loss that were not present in Clobber and made the strategies vastly different when carefully looked at. We eventually accepted Cloister and declined Stone Knights. In the last month, we have received 2 submissions similar to Clobber and Cloister (see: https://variants.world/posts/115 and https://variants.world/posts/153). Both of which were declined. When a concept gets used a lot (as another example, Dead Sea variants, see here for example: https://www.chess.com/clubs/forum/view/wof-king-eat), the standards obviously increase for it, or rather, innovation needs to happen. Obviously calling particular people out for this is pointless, because this happens a ton in Custom Variants and addressing it is no big deal Happy variant making!

Also, unlike other games of its kind, this game also has Petrified, which creates a unique form of gameplay. Players can use the ferz adjacent to the king to defend, their pawns to eat through the bounty pieces (and in some cases, promote and check the enemy king), and the amazon and general to check the king if there are not enough pawns to defend and the king is approaching the hill. Finally, the name "Too Much to Chew" is based off the common phrase "bite off more than you can chew," and here it's taken just a little more literally.
