I have seen that this has been recommended already but I don't see why we can't add this.
An idea I have for a variant that would be a cross over between Chess and Among Us is a 4 Player Fog of War variant, in which each player is randomly assigned a role, Crewmate or Imposter. At the start of the game there would be 3 crewmates and 1 imposter, with the crewmates not knowing who the imposter is. The imposter would win when by eliminating all but 1 of the crewmates, while the crewmates would win by voting off the imposter. The imposter could capture pieces, while the crewmates could not, and the way the imposter would kill a crewmate would be by capturing that crewmates king. If a crewmate was to see dead pieces from another crewmate he/she could report the death of that player, and then the players could discuss in the chat who they think the imposter is and then vote off that player. The army of the player that gets the most votes would be ejected from the board whether or not he/she is the imposter. Players could also vote to skip in order to avoid throwing off an innocent crewmate. For example In this position yellow could see a dead green bishop, and red could see a dead green queen, bishop, and pawn, and so either red or yellow could report the death of green, and then the remaining players could discuss who they think the imposter is and vote off that player. In the absence of seeing a piece from a dead player, a player would need to get a piece to the center of the board in order to call a meeting. For example In this position blue could call a meeting even though non of the players would be dead yet as the blue knight would be in the center of the board, however non of the other players could call a meeting as non of the other players would have pieces in the center of the board. Blue could then tell the other players that he/she saw red take his/her pawn and so red must be the imposter. After meetings the armies of all dead players would get removed from the board, including the army of any player that gets voted off. During meetings all the players individual move clocks would be paused, and no moves could be played on the board. Also it would only be during meetings that players could chat, and the chat would be muted outside of meetings. Also while crewmates could not capture pieces they would see the board as if they could. All other rules would be the same as in standard 4 player Fog of War.

As currently implemented, there is a fundamental problem with Automate. Some changes were made since its initial release, but they haven't really addressed the underlying issue. The key problem is that there is an optimal setup, and that it isn't particularly difficult to find. With the initial beta release, it used the original piece values. And people quickly figured out that the optimal setup involved a flood of pawns and bishops. The piece values were changed to prevent this, but rather than solving the real problem, it just changed the optimal mix. There is still an optimal setup, it's just not the same as it used to be. It's a little harder to find than the pawns/bishops, but anyone can experiment for a few games and figure it out. Tweaks to piece values will not solve this. Tweaks to piece values might, if perfectly balanced, result in 2-3 setups that are equally good, but no matter what you do, people will find these setups and start using them. And once someone starts using an optimal setup, they'll generally never lose. And people farther down in the rating pool will see what they're doing and copy it. Eventually, anyone who is reasonably alert will find this optimal setup, and we'll quickly reach draw death as all the top players are using the same mix of pieces. A couple possible solutions: Randomise the piece values and the total permitted points for every game. For example, the total points could be random in the range 20-45. Pawn values should be fixed at 1, or could be random in the range 1-2. Knights and bishops could be random in the range 2-5. Rooks could be random in the range 3-7. Queens could be random in the range 6-12.For example, you might have a game with a total of 42 points, P=1, N=4, B=3, R=7, Q=6. The optimal setup might involve a mix of bishops and queens.Your next game might have 23 total points, P=1, N=2, B=4, R=3, Q=8. Knights would be cheap, but rooks are cheap too, and with only 23 total points the board will be fairly open, and you'd have to decide whether you prefer rooks or knights or a mix. Each game would still have an optimal setup, but it would be different for every game, and you'd have to figure it out on the fly. Relax the restrictions on where you can place pieces.Your initial six pawns should be placed according to the current rules: 2nd and 3rd rank (5th and 6th for Black). After that, you should be able to place pieces anywhere (except that pawns can't go on the 1st and 8th ranks). There should be a maximum of 10 pawns instead of 8. Yes, you should be able to place multiple pawns on the same file if you want. There should be no rule against placing pieces behind the other person's pawns. These pieces may be stranded without much support, but they could also be threatening everything. If you are unable to place a king on an unthreatened square, you lose instantly. Of course, neither side should place the king until all other pieces have been placed. As a result, you would have tactical decisions to make during the setup phase. Right now, it's pretty straightforward to ensure that everything is sufficiently defended and all your pieces are reasonably active, so all you need to do is get the right mix of pieces. But with this rule change, where you place your pieces suddenly becomes at least as important as what you place. You can place a piece to create a threat - and your opponent will have to react to it by placing something to defend the threat. It's not hard to imagine weird setups where, after the initial six pawns are placed, both players put all their pieces behind the other player's pawn wall. Either of these rule tweaks would solve the problem. I actually think the two of them together would be a lot of fun: randomise the total points and piece values for every game, and also allow tactical complications during the setup phase. That would ensure that every game is unique, that we don't see all the top players using the exact same setup, and that high-level games are not all draws involving the same setups in every game.

I think crazyhouse should be added to the beta variants as it would be interesting to see crazyhouse combined with other variants, as well as crazyhouse from custom positions.

https://www.chess.com/variants/custom/game/22080895/0/1 In this game i made a structure called the stone prison. This is a custom game where you can promote a lot of pieces move pawns how you want, it is XXL chess, and you have stone wall or the petrified mechanic. What i did here was a simple plan, I would sac pieces capturing piece that are sorrounding the enemy king (just like atomic) but with the petrified physics. That way the king was smothered and using any fairy knight piece i can smother mate the king. What is hard about this is that any piece can block and if u capture it your piece becomes stone too but i have 14 pawns that i can use to promote pieces. This was a real battle because my opponent defended very well with the pawns but not even with 5 knight-riders, a rook, some generals, some camels, an elephant, and more enemy pawns, my opponent could never defend properly and once i got rid of all those defenders, i smother mated the black king that was trapped in a stone prison and could not escape because of my very camel rider that was like "hoho no, you ain't escaping, black king" because no pieces could capture it or the king would simply be more trapped than what he already is. Once it's done, the stone prison is impossible to defend.

Hello fellow variant enthusiasts! I recently posted a nigh incomprehensible info dump on my own deranged chess variant played on an orb instead of a board. You can view the original blog post here: https://www.chess.com/clubs/forum/view/spherical-board-chess I am back with more mad ravings to shout into the void. Opening Setup Figure 1: The biggest drawback of spherical chess when compared to orthochess is obvious in that you can only see 1/2 of the playing surface at a time. My previous 3d renderings of the sphord were jarring and I feel hard to understand. However, all squares on the sphord (spherical board) can be depicted in 2 views, in this case one view from the red side of the sphord and one from the blue side of the sphord. There is the added benefit that reducing the game to a 2d format may allow an eventual adoption on chess.com. Figure 2: As you can see the red and white views are not the only 2d perspectives one can create for the sphord. One could rotate the sphord on a vertical axis to view it form the kingside or the queenside as well. Here we see that colored squares have 4 sides and have duplicates of the opposite color (eg there is 4b-red and 4b-blue). Grey triangles on the other hand have no duplicates and bridge the gap between the red and blue zones (there is only one f2 space). Note that from this view the ranks can be represented linearly, but the files are resented as rings of polygons radiating out from the a and h files. The closer you get to a bisecting plane of the sphere the more cells each file has. The a file has only 2 cells, while the d file has 14 cells. Figure 3: Rotating the sphord toward or away from the viewer gives the white and black views of the sphord. These views give the most obvious perspective on the opening setup for each side. Just as in orthochess, the white king and queen start on e2 and d2 respectively. With the only 2 cells on the first rank now full, the minor pieces and rooks live on the second rank, forming a perimeter around their regents. Spherical chess has 10 pawns instead of 8. The all start on the 3rd rank and there are 4 red zone pawns and 4 blue zone pawns. The grey zone pawns on the g and b files may choose to advance into either of the two colored zones.

This variant is, close to Crazy house, but, when you capture a piece, let's say a knight, it spawns immediately were your knight would start. For example. A piece captured a knight. The squares were your original knight started (B1, G1 for white, B8, G8 for black), the captured knight will 'spawn' there. Thus, it is yours. But if you want to capture the knight, and the those B1 G1 (If you are playing white), and B8, G8 (If you are playing black) squares are taken by some other piece, you can't capture the knight. Everything else is the same of the standard chess.

Sphere Chess I have been playing with an idea of how one could build a spherical chess board, where pieces would move almost exactly like they would on a flat board but with some small alterations to deal the the challenges of non-Euclidian geometry. Figure 1: Here is a a mockup of the "board" (sphere? the sphord? surface where you put the pieces!) and the pieces in their starting positions. All the pieces are pretty minimalist and they correlate to their FIDE 2d counterparts. Understanding the Sphord My first idea was to divide the sphord into longitude and latitude like a globe, but that got really messy near the poles, so I used orthogonal latitudes to dived up the sphere. Figure 2: To create the cells on the surface, the sphere is first divided by 7 latitudinal rings. Each latitudinal ring is spaced evenly from its neighbors. Each is 1/8 of the circumference away from the next. Note that each ring lies in a plane and though the rings are equidistant on the sphere's surface, the planes marking the rings are closer together at the poles by Euclidean geometry. Figure 3: Further dividing the sphere by 7 more latitudinal rings that are rotated 90% from the first. Basically giving us a wonky globe with which has an east and a west pole in addition to north and south. When viewed from dead on you can see we now have a ranks a files to play on, with the ranks running north to south, and the files running east to west. But there is a problem! there are duplicates of many of the cells. For example there is a "C6" cell on the face of the sphord facing on the board in Fig3b, but there is also a "C6" cell that we can't see on the other side of the board. Figure 4: In order to give every cell a unique coordinate of the sphord I decided to break the cells into 3 zones. - The blue zone contains all the duplicated squares on the face of the sphord where the first rank is at the top and the a file is on the right. - The red zone is the mirror image of the blue. When viewing the red zone head on, with the first rank facing upward, the a file will be on the left. - The grey zone runs in a ring between the blue and red zones and contains all unduplicated cells. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- In the future I may post about piece movement and special rules that would make spherical chess playable, but I am realizing that just explaining the layout of the board is a lot. Obviously making a digital playable version of this would require 3d rendering not suitable for chess.com but I figured if anyone would care about my crazy idea it would be you people. I have some 3d modeling skills, but I don't know how to code. If anyone with game design savvy is reading this maybe we can talk.

https://www.chess.com/variants-test/paradigm-chess30/game/11321 New to this club (I usually play 4 Player Chess), I'm not sure how reporting bugs works, but the Comfuter in this game decided to just completely ignore logic... move8 , Queen blunder move9 , Dragon Bishop blunder move11 , it decides to trade Dragon Bishop for a normal Knight, even though the Dragon Bishop is arguably stronger? Plus Comfuters don't like to trade. move15 , last few moves were all trapping my Dragon Bishop, but it decides to ignore it once I finally hang it. Is this just the Comfuter being stupid, or is it bugging out?
