If the Black to move, they're making the mate in 4. But now White to move.Only forward, like in the Horde! Find the mate attack.

New update of our award-winning chess variant is live on iOS & Android. The app is now a LOT more accessible for new players, with in-game help text and a basic AI to learn against. Oh and if you get good, the 3rd annual World Championships are later this month online. ;) https://www.dogearedgames.com/colour-chess-app/ https://youtu.be/f-xA1wqenlg

Is there a way to prevent observer during a Fog of War game?
jayeggert Aug 10, 2021
Play 4 mate, and in the case of stalemate the remaining players share the points. Other than what I mentioned and the position in the picture the rules would be the same as in 3-player.
I was wondering if we could have a board editor for variants, so that we can create custom positions for the custom variants instead of being limited to the existing positions?

The power of hypnosis. You just have to place the king. Where will you place it? Of course on the h8.

I still can't find these two pieces' official name. Is there anyone knows what are their names?

Chess Creator's Oath: I promise, as a variant creator, to never patent a game of Chess. My game is free. Chess is free. I rescind all rights of intellectual property.I recognise no Chess authority. Chess belongs to all humanity.Chess is for everyone. May it be, that Chess remains unfettered and free. Colossal Chess So my latest invention is built on a 64 x 64 board. It's a bit rediculous... If you can't see the image clearly, right click and open in a new tab. In this variant I have used a lot of fairy pieces. I have been relatively conservative with rider pieces as this will become the de facto valuable pieces in this game with such a large board. There is 1 King and 1 Amazon on the board. Within the Pawn "frontline" I have used 4 rows of pawns, 2 rows of berolina, 1 row of soldier and 1 row of stone general. Rules Pawn pieces can only move 1 square at a time, however, at the start of the game the players can agree to push all pawns within the "frontline" further up the board by an agreed amount (up to 8). After the pawn agreement phase play may begin starting with White. Pieces move as they do with regular fairy piece movement. Pawns promote in the eighth "rank region" (57th rank), but only the sergeant may promote into an Amazon. A King may castle with an "Elephant"(Rook-Knight) on the first rank provided that niether piece has moved, there are no pieces in between them and the King would not be in or passing through check in order to castle. There is no 50 move non capture rule for draws (this game is rediculous). Custom Settup The above example is only a standard I'm defining. Custom settup is the heart of this variant. You take all the pieces from above and you assign them in whatever format you want within the first 3 regions in your territory. Both you and your opponent plan your settups secretly then you bring your armies to the field in the format you gave chosen (no automate 1 at a time thing here, but you can play like that if you want to.... [I wouldn't]). Mercenaries variation In Mercenaries an agreed upon points scheme for all pieces is drawn up for all pieces and each player agrees upon being allocated a certain number of "points" in which to spend before the game begins. A player must spend all his/her points before the game begins and can buy whatever piece they like according to the agreed price and place them whereever they want. Each player does this in secret first before bringing the armies to the table. At a later date I may come up with a point system and suggested price values for players to start if they wish to play this variant but I got stuff to do now :v Hope you like it :0

Hello everyone, in this thread im gonna show some setups and explain their pros and cons. Keep in mind that i am have only 1950 rating points in Automate so my evaluations can be incorrect. 1. Cavalry This is a popular strat that rely on knights only. It consists of 8 pawns and 9 knights almost all the time and looks like this: Pros: It wins against medium setups quite often It hasn't any weak squares to exploit (for example: opponent can't put 2 rooks to focus weak pawn) Have 8 pawns so you can "skip" 2 turns and watch what your opponent wants to play Cons: Losing to strong setups If you want to play this: place pawns on 3rd rank and only then on the 2nd rank so your setup will be consealed as long as possible. If you want to counter this: pick bishops for you setup, at least 4 of them or 4 rooks with a good placement, place your king as far as possible so knights cannot reach him easily. Here is an example game: 2. Conclave This is a strategy of bishops, number of bishops can vary, usually it is 6 bishops + queen + rook + 6 pawns or 8 pawns + 9 bishops. Setup with 6 bishops is the most powerful in the game. Setup looks like this: Pros: Very strong setup, one of the strongest so far, winning almost everything Safe king Cons: Can be defeated with 4 rooks on the same open files as bishops, not sure. Easy to spot that you are trying to play this setup (4-6 pawns already showing your setup clearly to your opponent) If you want to play this: Place bishops carefully so they will not be attacked by a bunch of rooks right from the start. If you want to counter this: Place your king on a diagonal which is not occupied by enemy bishops, so it will not be targeted right from the start. Try to place rook battery on open file or use 3 bishops of the same color. Game example: 3. Flex setup My favourite strategy, because you can exploit weak spots, vary pieces and their places. Interesting to play. Can contain: 4 rooks + queen + 2 bishops + 6 pawns 3 rooks + queen + 3 bishops + 7 pawns 2 rooks + queen + 4 bishops + 8 pawns Standard variation: Pros: Strong setup, decent chance to win Flexible, you can vary your set of pieces, for example: if you don't understand what your opponent wants to play, you can "skip" turn with 7th pawn or even with 8th. Flexible king position, you can place your king on b2 or g2, you can use it to place king on safest side of the board. Cons: Conclave destroys most of the variations of this setup 2 weak pawns in the center can be exploited by opponent Can be dangerous to place rooks on open files if you have black pieces If you want to play this: Place your king on safest side, place 2 bishops first, so you can replace rooks in future if needed or put them to defend weak pawns. If you want to counter this: Strats with big amount of minor pieces can win sometimes, target weak pawns, be careful with usage of "a" and "h" files as they will be occupied with opponents rooks. Game example: That's all for now, if you have any questions, suggestions or new setups, please write in this thread or reach me out in private. I hope this setups will help.
When I attempt to create a custom variant with stonewall and giveaway, the pieces don't turn into walls. maybe I misunderstand what stonewall is. Can someone explain it to me?

Celebrating International Chess Day. And yes a formation of identical chess pieces (2x2) can move as a separate combat unit using four squares of the board (2x2) as one square. But this square (2x2) must be either empty or completely filled with chess pieces. If there are one, two or three chess pieces on this square (2x2), then the movement of the 2x2 formation to this square is impossible. In all other cases, the movement of chess pieces occurs according to the rules of standard chess. To win, it is enough to checkmate at least one king. Or to achieve a situation when the opponent's kings are given check and at least one of these kings cannot hide from the threat. Happy International Chess Day!

In late 2017 I was hooked on 4 Player Chess, but unhappy because the (old) 4 Player Chess program lacked so many features, and nothing was being done, so I volunteered. 4 years later, I've rebuilt 4PC from scratch, added tons of features (queue system, custom variants, etc). This last year, I've refurbished 4PC into "4PC 2.0" aka chess.com/variants. Variants is nothing else but 4PC with added "2 player friendliness", and some extra variants (atomic, sideways, etc). Chesscom developers assisted variants, getting the app more integrated into the system and its performance improved.Variants was launched early in a minimal version to allow 2player variants (atomic, horde, etc). Full support of all 4PC features is nearly done, and we hope to get it ready to take over 4PC within a month or two.Further, I've started adding support for more variants, such as crazyhouse and automate-style setup chess, but it's unfinished, and will have to wait.My story is that I built whatever I wanted to (thought was cool or necessary). With variants 90% done (to accommodate 4PC), I burnt out last March, and took 3 months off. Now I'm back, but with a limited capacity. I don't want to code much anymore, I'd much prefer helping others get familiar with the app, and help them add their own features or variants.I have permission from chess.com to let people contribute, as long as I ensure quality. Perhaps I can be thought of as "the thibault of 4 player chess" If you are motivated to help 4PC and chess.com/variants become the coolest variants site you could ever imagine, we would love to see what you can do!Please ask any question you might have in this topic.Code is all javascript (pure/node/vue)You will need to sign an NDA (non-disclosure), eg. the code belongs to chess.comIf you are interested, please send me a private message.
Hello guys; I am currently creating a Variant resource-like blog; And I am trying to cover as much Variants as possible; I have done the no castling part for now; I would love to have your comments! https://www.chess.com/blog/1-c41-0
I cannot place a piece in automate AT ALL! Speaking of automate, there is no ways to make game unrated or making time limit, to, as I said, place a piece.

Linear Chess Linear chess was created in Colorado in 1996 by me and is a chess variation where all sides of the board are connected, and the pieces may move in linear lines off the board to the other side. For example, the Rook on g2 may move to b2. The pawns are arranged on the first and eighth rows so that they are considered back to back and can not attack each other in this position. The royal pieces (King, Queen, Rook, Bishop, and Knight) are arranged on the second and third rows in the phalanx position as shown in figure 1 below. The game is over when the king is checkmated. (Figure 1) In Linear Chess, the royal pieces engage each other first. Next, the pawn battle begins and determines who will promote. Finally, material advantage needs to be great enough to trap the king in the center of the board which is difficult because there are no edges so the king may jump from side to side. All chess rules are valid including en-passant except for castling which can not be performed in this position. It has been played at Prince Sultan Air Base in Saudi Arabia Coalition complex between the British, French, and U.S. Forces in 1999 and 2000 during Operation Southern Watch as a side game between chess matches.

It's a very simple one, here's the differences from normal chess: 1. There is no royal piece, the king is now just like any of the other pieces. The ways to win no longer involve checkmating the king. 2. There's no more castling. (There's no royal piece to protect, so it would be kind of pointless to leave this move in the game.) 3. Stalemating the opponent is a win. (It would be pretty lame if they just had 2 pawns left and then stalemated themselves for a draw.) 4. Players with one remaining piece are forfeit. (Otherwise, you could have a situation where a player is up a queen to a bishop and its would just be a draw.) Name Ideas: 1. Democratic Chess (There's no royal piece.) 2. Antiantichess (While the goal of antichess is to get rid of all your pieces, the goal of this variant is to get rid of all your opponents pieces.) Comment any changes you think should be made and/or which name idea you want, or a name idea of your own if you thought of one.

In this variant, you can't see your own pieces, but you can see your opponent's pieces. The setup is the same as standard chess, and all the standard rules apply. But you just can't see your own pieces!
gullupakka Jun 29, 2021
Okay, so I have posted about a variant where you can see your opponent's pieces but not your own, but what about a 19 player chess game? The rules are the same a regular 4 player chess, but it has 19 players! What do you guys think?
