A TALLY OF DATABASE-USERS & NON-USERS

I use SCID with a database of 3,000,000 games.  I also use the opening explorer which shows me a nifty chart of the most significant lines from the searched position.

Mr. MainStreet, perhaps we can also have a vote as to who gave the best argument for their position. Perhaps we can ask the non-users to choose who among the users they think gave the best argument and vice-versa.

Good idea! Please cast your votes...

(1) the other side's poster's name... (2) why so?... (3) your own side's poster's name but not your own name - but no more elaboration on the why...

For simplication purposes, here's a sample:

(1) ABCDEFG

(2) touched on both the philosophy, mathematical and psychology angles

(3) RSTUV

Thanks, hmcgrier. I've subtracted you from the table and from the count (so post #277 should NOW be correct).

What is the point of playing your games without figuring out your moves by your own, I mean it's you that should have the fun not the computer (:

I am a non-user. I really don't see the point in using such stuff during a game. By all means use them afterwards or for training to improve your chess game but I am disappointed that some of my opponents are using a database/books during a game.

Correspondance chess, turn chess, call it what you want but it's primary purpose is learning; to improve ones skill for OTB. It is not about winning or losing.

I use a database so as to practice and sharpen my opening knowledge. The games here give me that opportunity and then I can let go of the database once the game enters a direction where I can sharpen my middle game skills forward.

I don't care if I win or lose, that is not my objective, my aim is to improve my opening knowledge combined with improving my ability to come up with a correct plan of action based on the direction the game has taken.

In reading through the postings, there seem to be, broadly-speaking, 6 types:

(A)

NON-USERS

(B)

Non-Users

(C)

non-users

(D)

users

(E)

Users

(F)

USERS

(A)

OTB-diehards who reject non-OTB as cheating

(B)

Unaware of the distinction between CC and OTB / unaware the facilities exist / might consider for future use

(C)

Tried above-OTB facilities and decided against them

(D)

Lightweight above-OTB facility users (Analysis Board)

(E)

Occasional DB Users (Game Explorer)

(F)

Heavy DB Users

And isn't it a wonder that a simple tally request can cause some people to even adapt a stance of "looking for a fight", when they're not even forced to join in? :)) Cool it, fellow-posters, it's just a voluntary tally. To me, it seemed the other way round! A number of non-users were arguing from a position of being unaware of the OTB/CC distinction, and that the bulk of chess on this site is CC-based. Some non-users were arguing that CC-facilities should be removed from everyone. No users were arguing that CC-facilities should be mandatory.
