And mind you don't use any scripting or artificial aids - just One-Thumb-Bashing on the keyboard.
I'm sorry for the misunderstanding caused by my previous post, gentlemen (qtsii, Gonno, & MS). No comparison was intended but just pointed out possible missed opportunities to learn the whole aspect of that Defence.
Thanks, MainStreet for giving me the background between you and Gonnosuke. But you know what? A student can be better than the teacher. I look forward to see you beating your mentor on equal terms. Should I add-soon?
Personally, I use an analysis board for about 20% of the moves. I believe it has helped me learn faster. I went several years playing only normal chess and plateaued at about 1350 for a long time. After about 9 months of using the analysis board 20% of the time or so (yes, the most difficult 20%) my real rating has increased from 1350 to about 1750. Chess.com correspondance chess feels like practice to me.
I have never read a book of chess or used any databases, only a pure practise.Concidering this,it makes me a none-user.
The distinction between User and Non-User is on the basis of these COT guidelines:
NON-USERS "... play "over the board" chess, as if we were playing face to face, and unable to use analysis boards, opening books, or any other external aid to help us, we promised we would use our knowledge and experience only to play the game." ( http://circleoftrust.bravehost.com/ )
USERS use any or all legitimate facilities while playing the game. This EXCLUDES Chess Engines (such as Fritz) and Endgame Tablebases. (chess.com playing rules)
Counted up to (and including) post #517.
And mind you don't use any scripting or artificial aids - just One-Thumb-Bashing on the keyboard.

Misunderstandings are the spice of life's discussions. Let it pass, partner. Peace.
A student better than the teacher? True. Mainstreet better than Gonnosuke? Not in this life! :)) But you may call that a "stretchhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhed goal". :))
Stay fit... Play well.
Hi, I'm new here (this site is coool). I use opening books and sometimes databases for correspondence play. I am a tad surprised to see the number who don't.
I'm happy to take on a few non-users on the promise that I'll abide by COT rules for the sake of experimentation and such. My current rating is about 1900 so, say a non-user of about 2000, 1950, 1900, 1850, 1800, 1750, 1700 with 2 or 4 games each - evenly mixed white/black? If someone wants to set something up I'd be happy to participate for the sake of science. Remind me, are we allowed to use the analysis board or not? It'll have to be 3 or 7 days a move - I'm a bit busy with work at present.
Let's see a few others join in to make it a bit more statistically viable.
I'm not a heavy user, so this may need to be taken into account.

Users-Non-users Friendship Tournament (Unrated)
May someone with the capacity to create a tournament of unlimited players kindly facilitate one for us?
Suggested rules / format: (open for comments)
1. Players: only the posters in this thread
2. Outside sources: anything under the sun is ok, except for chess engines, which are not actually allowed in correspondence chess.
A User , whether a previous User or a Non-user who wants to experiment on the use of outside sources in the tournament, is requested to post in this thread if any outside source is actually in use. It's also interesting that the User point out up to what move number any outside source has been used.
In the same manner, a Non-User is to post in this thread his/her decision to play without any outside source. If at any point during a game, the Non-User chooses to use any source, for example opening a book - then the player is requested to post the shift in this thread.
3. Starting Date: October 1
4. # of days per move: 3 days
5. Pairings: any suggestions?
6. # of simultaneous games: any suggestions?
7. Chess Opening: any
8. Unrated
Note: this is individual play, not a vote chess format.
I stand on my skill alone during a game,no aid of any kind if I am not good enough to win then so be it,after the game I use a chess engine to analyze wins and losses to see where I can improve my play but otherwise I live by my motto;losing is learning not being defeated on the chess board..

So 50% of the users on the website use a DB then?
And 50% of those users use them effectively?
Non-User
Obvious reasons.I would compare using database with being allowed to use books when you have an examen at school, which would be great sometimes but...
Non-Users - 69... Users - 68

And I would compare not using a database with trying to study for a test without using books.
I think Gonnosuke is about to lose this argument to a fine Spanish woman.
to me a game of chess is a battle of wits, mine against my oponnents, therefore i belive if i used a chess engine or reference books it would not be my "wit" that gained me a victory! I win or lose using my mind only!
I truly belive that doing so brings more satifaction in victory!
